Hello my 'Community' friends.

I have discovered that my great grandfather was born in Ireland in about 1840. By 1871 he and his future family was living in Scotland so I had always assumed he was Scottish, but it now looks as though he might have been Irish. I want to go further back into the Irish connection. Could anyone please give me details of the best website to go to. Thank you - Carole

My husbands ancestor was born in Cork in 1818....................no idea if I can ever find a birth for him.

*sits on thread to wait for someone clever*

Hello Carole.....I could jump up and down and hug you for asking that question.

I have Irish ancestry and haven't looked for a while as I was getting nowhere with more recent names......anyway...after you asked I tried to find one of the websites I usually use but came across this one instead
http://www.emeraldancestors.com/?gclid=CKSE7Yj0648CFRoeEgodow1CMA

Counties Antrim, Armagh, Down, Fermanagh, Londonderry and Tyrone.

It is a paying site but with good search facilities....most of the details can be found.....and.....yippee!!!!!....I found the one I was looking for......tis for N Ireland though so I hope you are able to find whoever you are searching for.

Am now off to subscribe

worth a nudge...

Carole, have you put this on tips too?

Also,if you do a search, using the top tips on the left, search the word Irish or Ireland, you will find loads of threads about it, always useful to bookmark.

From Teresa who is hoping her son doesn't ask her to search his fathers side, for their Irish connection.

Thanks for putting up this thread, I knew there was an Irish Granny in my Scottish lineage, but looked for her and couldn't find her.....when I went back a further generation from my Gt.Granny, there she was - Jane Gallagher, married to another Irishman in Scotland.....and they had come over some time in the potato famine to the Scottish coalfields in Ayrshire......

I was so happy - but she had a sad ending....

She is on my mind so I really want to try and find out about her early life in Co. Tyrone.....her husband was born in Leitrim.....

....again, thanks....

Thanks all of you who replied.

Theresa - Yes I have tried 'Tips'
section as well and I'll check Top Tips.
I'm not sure what a Nudge is ? Is it to bring question up to the top - if so how ?

Susan and Sally I'm really pleased if my question has helped you with your Irish ancestry. I'll try the website you mention.

Someone mentioned the Potato famine so I'm going to look into that.

Thanks for your help. Caz

When you find the thread you need to nudge add a post with just a letter or the word nudge in it and it goes to the top of the board again.

Carole, I could hug you over and over again.

You will never know how over the moon I am!!

I knew bits of the family History but have just squashed a Myth that they came originally from Scotland ( may have done years back but haven't got that far )...Knew they were from Liverpool then just the one over to Ireland.....I have now found them in all the UK censuses and found that they came originally from Wales..no less.....These are my Childrens Great Greats.....on their Father's side......Have found so much Since Carole put up this thread.

One can still do a search without paying so it is worth having a look....there are some Catholic Marriages

Calm down Susan ! It's a great story. You know I always thought my ancestors were Scottish and had no idea that my great grandfather might have been Irish. My father didn't ever mention it. I'd love to tell him but unfortunately he is no longer with us.
Stll don't know what the best website might be !
