Can someone please tell me where to look for the birth record for someone born in 1819? Do I have to go to the relevant records office, and how much information do I need in order to find his birth? I know that my James Curtis was born in Portsea in 1819 but I'm trying to find out his parents names. I also know he married in Alverstoke in 1847, so could look at his marriage certificate for his father? Thank you!

We got ours by writing to the appropriate archive centre and they sent the form back for us to fill in and we sent a cheque with it.

Hi Gillian

You can find pre 1837 records at Familysearch.org. I have found James baptism for you.

He also has a brother

Thanks Dianne and Pat,
I've just looked on family search - how did you find the brother??
and how do you know that the John who married Mary Hutchings is the correct person? Sorry to be so dumb...!

Yes, it would be great wouldn't it Pat? No more brick walls for anyone !!

Gillian. When you get on the site, click on IGI on the left hand side. A new form will come up.

Fill the form in ie James curtis, baptism, 1819 +-2, British Isles, England, Hampshire, Search.

When you get the results (there are 2, one is someone else) click on your James.

When his baptism comes up it will show the parents names. Make a note of these.

Scroll down the page until you see Batch No. Click on this. A new form will come up. Fill in only the parents names in the top right hand side of the form, then click search.

This will give the result of all children baptised to this set of parents at this church.

I know it sounds a bit long winded, but just have a play about with it. You'll soon get the hang of it.

Good luck.

Hello again,
when you bring up james's christening there is a batch number at the bottom, click on that and when it takes you back to the search put in the names of the parents that appear on the christening record, it will then bring up other christenings with those parents. does that make sense?
As to the marriage its probably them but not 100% you would have to get the baptism cert to check.
Pat.

Ok, thanks for that! Another question though... Pat, you said to check the baptism certificate to confirm the parents. Where do I go to get this? Is the facility on-line or do I have to go to the records office?
One last thing! I know that James (1819) had a son John, born in abt 1851. I've gone through the same process with him to check for other siblings and I can't find him on Family Search. Is it unusual for entries to be missing, or am I doing something wrong?
Thank you!
Gill
