Well, Liz, I dont think the Akebia is a native plant of NZ. I looked it up in a garden encyclopedia. It is frost hardy, prefers full sun and any good well-drained soil. It tolerates a west or north-facing (that would be south for you) position. Dislikes disturbance
Propagate by seed in autumn or spring, by semi ripe cuttings in summer or by layering in winter.

Hope you are not too hung-over Daffers - you norty girl you! lol obviously you have to build up a tolerance level again, dontcha know!!! Next time you'll be able to hold more!

Liz - I've got an Akebia and it's gorgeous! Mine had climbed a 6 ft fence with ease in it's first year and its' lovely really dark purple small flowers have just about finished now - smothered in them it was - it sends out lovely twirling tendrils to help tether itself (we have a bit of trellis behind it to help it on) and it stands hacking away when it gets out of hand. They do say it smells of chocolate, but to be honest I prefer a Mars Bar for an honest to goodness choccie smell)))))

Mine was about 2 ft tall when I bought it, some 5 years ago I suppose and it went like the clappers (faces south with a low growing juniper at its feet, so I guess it must like cool feet and warm head like Clematis). I hope your goes - it's well worthy of a place in the garden.

Glad things are still on the up Daff and you enjoyed your celebratory meal and drink(s).

We went to the bluebell woods on Sunday and as always brought back plants from the stall, all money goes to the local church. It's a fairytale place with a beautiful cottage and nice small gardens which meander into a bluebell wooded area and then over the road is a further bluebell wood. I got talking to the lady owner, who is quite elderly and lives there alone, her ex sister in law collects the money at the gate and looks older and more wrinkly every year bless her and another friend or relative runs a bric a brac tent which always draws me and makes K niggled, lol. This year I got a beautifully made unused roman blind, not cane more like stiffish creamy coloured string of varying thickness so it is very unusual and probably was very expensive. It has all it's fittings with it too and I know exactly where it will fit in my house!!! I thought it was a roller blind till I got it home and undid it - got it for £2 and a lovely Nigerian wooden fruit bowl and two thick paper backs for another £2, then managed to persuade K to get me a Freckles viola, I love the various violets and have several of different kinds around the garden in tubs so this is another one to add to the collection. He only bought a poppy as they are his favourites, but I spotted a shrub and didn't recognise it, I asked Pat the owner and she came with me to look at it, it smelled divine and she told me it's an Akebia from N.Z. and told me to pull a piece of to try and root it, which I have done. I 've to pop back next week and see the woman who does the plant stall in case she has one ready rooted and if not will do one for me in case mine doesn't take, she said they are hard to get going. I looked on a plant website and it seems to be the one called Chocolate vine, which is rather appropriate lol I do love scented plants best.
Anyway glad you got your garden sorted out ready for planting and things are coming together well with it all. It will be a joy to look out for the new growth next spring especially and to watch it flourish and take shape.

Ann, I have estuary clay, with some proper clay.... so we never know what we'll get until we dig it up (Estuary clay being that real grey cluggy stuff!!)

Most things really like it. once we have added stuff to improve drainage... but the grey stuff... well, it stinks, and I wouldn't like to have my feet in it, lololol! But A has been digging it up, and it is getting better!! We have spent a fortune on topsoil in some places!.

Am off to bed now cos I am well ..... well, I am a bit the worse for wear, lolol!! See you all tomorrow.

Evening Daffy:-) Oh good news from the clinic...and happy to see you are celebrating in style with a nice bottle of red...attagirl:-)) Well it rained all day long but we had a wonderful day at the Zoo, saw the feeding of the Penguins and then the feeding of the pelicans, and then Butterfly Paradise (exquisite) but unfortunately a red butterfly landed on F's nose and he had a hissy fit! But we thoroughly enjoyed the day. Feckless parents have returned, happy and hungover and suitably grateful. And then the taxi driver on our trip home....well that is another story. pmsl....nighty night. BC XX

Dicentra Lol!!! You knew what I meant. We lost our pink one. Be very careful if moving the maple, they don't appreciate being moved. could put Lily of the Valley under it if you can get it to grow, we can't. Roses like a heavy clay if that is what the soil is but obviously not sub soil which it may be. Probably better to plant annuals there this year until the soil picks up, plenty of good compost when you plant them and annuals will be fine.

Just about to do the final page of C's scrap book. I will be sorry in a way when I have finished it. It has been such a trip down memory lane.

Dismal day here - raining fit to bust most of the day and then, sun out and warm quite quickly, only to be followed by dipping temps. and more rain! It must simply be because I cleaned the windows yesterday!!!!

We had a quick but nasty storm here a couple of hours ago, thunder, lightening and halestones!!!.......my poor workmen were making a new back gate and suddenly took off from back garden all the way round front and into garage.....plonkers there's a door from back garden into garage!!! lol
Kitchen is now finished, just need (once again) to get everything back into place....(another man been painting so had to move things again). New cupboard in hall....yehhhh atlast l have somewhere to put coats and hoover, and in the middle of all that new neighbours arrived to find we had workmens van in his drive..000ps, he was ok though:o)

You're all very busy in your gardens, mines desperate for some attention, will have to wait abit now.

Afternoon everyone ~~~~~~~~~ waves ~~~~~~~~.... just back from the clinic. Bloods are mainly up a bit... a little bit more than expected of my bunch of lazy, laid back stem cells, lololol, but less than from a more energetic owner!! Still, it is good progress... and I am having a piece of steak (just done) with chips, peas, mushrooms and grilled tomato to celebrate!!... Yummy. R has it all in hand, bless him..... I don't have to do a thing... except eat the almond and caramel magnum he has just asked me if I'd like while I am waiting... oh, and we have a good, expensive bottle of red to celebrate, too.

I have graduated from Day Clinic to Outpatients, lololol

My hip is very sore, had the marrow aspiration... doc went straight in with the spinal needles this time... they are longer, and so it was all sorted with very little bother, but the anaesthetic is wearing off now, and I feel like I've been kicked by a mule. But fingers crossed, as long as that one shows up nothing but good stuff, then I shan't need another unless I relapse.... but we are not even going down that road!!

The weather is a bit mixed.... beautifully warm when the sun is out, and freezing when the rain falls and the wind howls.

Ann, I have a white dicentra... mmmmm, I might lift it when it stops flowering, it loves it's spot, but is right next to a pink one, so I was going to move it anyway!!

The spot these are going into has had a patio over it for years.... it will be a while before the soil is really good, but we (erm, well I supervised, lol) put 4 bags of manure on it yesterday, so a good start... I don't think a rose would do too well there at the moment.... I'll keep an eye out for gypsophilia.... that'll look good. There is a maple tree there.... it is going to grow to 15 foot -is, so that spot will be dappled shade.... in fact, we are talking about moving the maple and putting it out the front... it is stunning!!

Sigh... must go and supervise in the galley, lolol... do you reckon it's too early to open the bottle??, lolol

Sorry, should have come on earlier to say am thinking of you at the clinic and hope all goes well for you. T not playing golf today, just as well as it has rained all morning, so we went and got the grocery shop.

You said your border need white flowers now daff, small flowers or shrubs? If shrubs white bleeding heart (can't remember the latin name) is nice or for autumn time White button daisies or chrysanth type daisies. Bedding allyssium, petunias, busy Lizzie, bedding begonias, pelargoniums (geraniums), lobelia. taller plant, white camanula. and oof course, there are lots of white roses.

Hiya BC... Columbine... granny's Bonnet or Aquilegia!! Save the seeds... it'll grow easily again in a pot overwinter on your patio... One of my favourites... I have a couple, but they have self seeded in an unusual place, lol so I have only just found them. Good luck with F and the lions tomorrow, lolol ;¬) You'll have earned a vat of wine after a day at the zoo, lol

BC.... Columbines = Aquilegia, my OH is very fond of them and we have loads, blue, pink, blue and white, pink and white, did have a red one not seen it yet this year, very pretty flowers.

Evening Daff:-) Glad to hear you have sorted the truncated R out and got your own way...lol....I got a lovely surprise today to find one of my 'mystery' plants emerged as the most beautiful pink Columbine! (I looked it up)...everything in my patio is blooming because of the hot weather. Had another lovely day with my two Angels...and tomorrow is the Zoo... timed to see the feeding of the Penguins! I do hope F does not escape my clutches and run with the lions or summat......nighty night all....am off to pour a glass of wine. mwahhh BC XX.
