Evening YG.

You have been a busy girl for a Friday night! Hope you manage to find something you like tomorrow thats within your budget. One problem that people 'like us' have is that we're unlikely to wear a 'posh frock' more than once! Just think of all those 'mother of the Bride' outfits lurking in the back of wardrobes.

Are you talking about the Grand National, David? We used to enter the office sweep-stake, but didnt bet other than that. We've never stepped inside a bookies and spent a grand total of $10 on slot machines in Vegas a few years ago.
OH & I might buy the occasional lotto ticket, maybe 20 lines per year?

I have been busy, DET, although it didn't take long after all the spring cleaning :-D :-D I will need to do the food shopping on Sunday, but might cheat by just nipping to the local shops for enough to see me through for a couple of days :-D

I did get a bit of wear from the outfit I bought for R's wedding, but the jacket more so than the skirt as it was navy. The hat was a complete waste of money and I finished up giving it to a friend of my Mum.

Four of us at work do the lottery every week, but I can only ever recall going into the bookies once to put a bet on for Mum when Red Rum was running. That was enough for him to lose the race and I felt extremely uncomfortable going in there and hadn't got a clue what to do :-D :-D :-D

I couldn't tell you the name of the favourite, been a lot of years since I backed a horse.

Was just thinking, years ago you might have a pen friend (I did) or occasionally send a post card or maybe a letter.
Now with the internet and word processors you can communicate with people any where. I find that quite remarkable. Thank you all for your company. :-D :-D :-D

I used to have a pen friend who lived in France. Not so far away really, but it seemed to be all those years ago. We were asked to have a friend by the school and we all went over there to stay with them,

My main memories are travelling by train at the weekend into the country where we going to celebrate a family birthday and developing a crush on Johnny Halliday who was a French pop star. I bought his new single called Retiens la Nuit to bring home with me and must have worn it out :-D :-D

I had two pen friends donkeys years ago. One was in Marseilles France. She used to write to me in English and I used to reply in French. This didn't last long as due to my poor command of the French language my letters were all pretty much the same, so she stopped it. The other was an usherette at a cinema in Ballymena. That stopped too, I was even more boring then. These days you can send and receive in minutes.
Have things improved? two generations never knew the pen and ink letters so it isn't easy making a comparison.

Evening LG :-) Was that a surprise for you or were you expecting them :-) :-) :-) :-) :-)

David, we had to write to them in French and when we visited them, we had to go to their school for a day. My penfriend was the only one that attended a different school to everyone else, so I was the only English child there that day. I can't say that I enjoyed it, although the rest of the holiday was ok.

When I lived in Cornwall some years ago, we took in French students for 3 weeks at a time. Most were ok, but we had one or two that left a lot to be desired :-( :-(

We thought they would probably come but we did not know for sure until mid morning. Oh how the little one has grown and such a cheerful chappie. <3,
I hope you manage to get something nice tomorrow YG.

I used to have an American pen pal many years ago. It suited me not to have French as I cannot speak English properly let alone foreign ;-)

YG

YG Report 8 Apr 2016 21:50

We weren't given any option, LG :-D :-D It was to assist our French lessons :-D :-D :-D

Goodness knows what I will finish up with tomorrow! I have just been looking at fascinators and hatinators on EBay to get an idea of the sort of fittings that they have. I really don't know how I am going to keep one fastened in my hair, but hey ho, we will find out tomorrow :-0 :-0 :-0 :-0

I gave up French and took up zoology and Biology instead

Off to bed now. Enjoy the littlies :-) :-) :-) :-) :-) :-) :-)

Sleep well :-) <3

How lovely for you LG! Are you child minding at the moment while H catches up with her friends?? If they have to go back to school by Monday, it'll be a short visit. You'll be both shattered and sad when they leave.
Just think - if/when OH stops working, you'll have plenty of opportunity to visit :-D

My French penfriend was called Marianne Roy and she lived 'near' Lyons. It probably wasn't that 'near' but it was the closest airport. Although the pen-pal scheme was organised by the school, it was only intended that we should exchange letters until her parents invited me to stay with a reciprical visit from her. We were both UMs - unaccompanied minors :-D :-D
Total immersion is certainly the best way to learn a language. Even though her English was a lot better than my French, I was starting to 'think' in it before the end of the exchange.

There used to be magazines who would match you with someone in another country for a small fee - £5?? The other one I had lived in Chicago, IL. Strange girl. That fizzled out.

Eldest is still in touch with her French exchange pen-pal via FB. She came to stay a couple of times and vice versa. They must have 'met' about 20 years ago by now. Strangely enough, she was brought up and lives in Lyon as well.

No childminding DET and they do not go back to school until the 18th their terms are different to ours down here.
Nite nite YG and hopefully catch up with you tomorrow to see what you have purchased.

I am saying nite now too as no doubt we will have early risers :-D :-D :-D

Morning all, It's been so long since French lessons at school and subsequent pen pals I could very likely get lost after a couple od sentences.
There is such a diversity of dialects within the UK I can find it difficult to fully understand some people not a million miles from town.
Maybe I'm not paying sufficient attention.

Morning all

With LG being under invasion, she's not going to have much time to post. Enjoy the time with Littlies. Most of the schools round here started Easter break in Good Friday then have 2 full weeks off starting Easter Monday. Only a couple more days before we can stop tripping over little people when we go out!

April Showers - we should expect them, but it would be good if it were warmer. Hope you don't get too cold when you're out and about Maz.

YG, don't forget to describe your QGP outfit when you get home!

David - do you think regional accents have 'blurred' nowadays? It's probably down to us listening to so much TV where actors & people aren't expected to have 'BBC' pronunciation any more. There's so much more relocation now. You only have to think of Maz born Sussex but living Durham, or my daughter in law born Newcastle, living Kent!

Eldest is planning to collect her radiator cover later today. Although It will only be a flying visit, will be nice to see her.

David

David Report 9 Apr 2016 11:15

I don't know Det, other than what I see and hear. I'm from Newcastle, my Father was Irish, my Mother was English (Geordie)
I'm aware that within a few miles of Newcastle there are so many various accents / dialects. Compare Blyth with Ashington, compare them with Newbiggen, compare any of them with Sunderland or Chester-Le-Street.So different.

You notice any actors James Bolam and Jimmy Nail as examples, when they get into show business they have elocution lessons to lose the twang.

Evening everyone :-)

I am home and shattered, but had a lovely day.

We started off at the private hospital for R's appointment with the consultant (he has BUPA through work, so doesn't have to pay!! ;-) We then went for lunch (a treat on me!) before starting the shopping. Poor R is crippled with pain, so he sat quietly and very patiently while M & C ran around bringing me all sorts of stuff to try on.

I have finally settled on a pale pink dress trimmed in navy, with navy jacket and fascinator, pink & navy bag. Still got to buy the underneath essentials to hold everything in and the shoes and a necklace and earrings!!
