morning All, Evening Kim

Hope you have a nice day Mel and the sun comes out for you,

It's cloudy here today and we have had rain in the night,

I have to go into town today to get a birthday present for Sofia, it's actually from MIL she has asked me if I would buy it as she is stuck in the house and can't get out . her shingles are painful and her other medical problem is still causing her a lot of discomfort and the hospital haven't sent her a date for her operation yet, she is really feeling very low
Sofia's birthday is on the 8th of September, still a bit to go yet but I like to be organised in plenty of time, still want to get a birthday card for her but am finding it hard to get one with Granddaughter and no 4 on.
May end up with just a number 4 after all it won't make much difference to Sofia she will be happy just with any card :-D :-D

Coffee time :-) :-)

Morning All and Evening Km,

Misty moisty morning here today. We are going to try and get to Hartland Abbey today with BIL etc. I have checked that they are open this time and they open from Tuesday to Thursday. I doubt we will do the house but just the gardens and down to the private beach.

Never been there so don't know what it is going to be like. Then again they may have changed their minds by the time they arrive here.

Slept well last night.

David my foot is a bit better now.

Well, you have had a good day Mel.......all those prizes too.......you just needed to win a dog next!! You should have got a lottery ticket today while you were on a winning streak! It's good you aren't left any mess, but I suppose they appreciate being able to use your field and will want to come again in the future.

I am sick of beans and tomatoes now, all that preparing and skinning and then cooking!!

The alarm clock has righted itself!! I took the battery right out and put it back and it whizzed to 12.00 o'clock and stopped for a while then whizzed to the right time......so LESS EXPENSE!!

I keep thinking it's Sunday today. :-S Carvery then trip to Nuneaton tomorrow.....OH needs new specs. I just KNOW he's going to pick the blackest, thickest frames and pretend he loves them....just to wind me up!!!! lol. :-)

Well trying hard to keep my eyes open, and it's only twenty to 9. it's very confusing that every night at 7.00 I take my pills , same 50gms and some nights I can stay awake till 10, then other nights like tonight I can hardly keep my eyes open :-S

so I better say good night before I fall asleep , Hope everyone has had a good day. :-D :-D

Hello all,

We have had a lovely day with the dog show. I bought three strips of raffle tickets and so did oh. I won first prize a big box of dog food chews hide chews in two different sizes a big box of bonios two tins of dog food a huge rope dog toy tied in about five knots a bag of those dog sausage rolls biscuits and a blue chicken dog toy which I kept. The next prize I won was a box of dog of waitrose dog biscuits with a bag of training treats stuck to it and oh won a lovely leather collar and lead and we don't have a dog!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I gave it all away except the chicken which is now sitting in the kitchen and I kept some biscuits and the rolls for Di's dogs. It was nice to wallk round and give people with their dogs a little pressy and they were all very grateful.

We have no cleaning up to do as the people who run the show doo all that and it is always left nice and clean and tidy.

Thanks to Ruby for the pics and now I have one of her to add to my threadateers file. It is always nice to know who you are talking to. :-D and Ruby you are just like I imagined. Loved the hats and the spread was great too.

Ann that workhouse was a big one and it is nice to see one kept as it would have been.

Airiated is a word I hav'nt heard for a long time. It was also said in our house. My nan always told grandad not to get airiated and if he got stroppy she she would sing a little song to him which went something like this.

Off to work he goes.
With his little nosebag he wanders through the snow.

She called him Little Annie when she was cross with him too.

This would make him even crosser!

Hi Everyone

Jane, Frank , I looked on e-bay at the same spoons and the bid is still at £15 as no one has put in a bid, mind you the last date for bidding is the 30 Aug. maybe they are hanging on till then ?
mine are gilt spoons, the silver ones seem to be doing better.

We had our last BBQ tonight Katherine & Jake joined us before they went off to the gym, OH will put the grill back in the shed tomorrow when it's cooled down, the clouds are starting to come over early these nights and it's getting dark about 9.30 it's not cold though, we were bothered tonight with flies and wasps , we kept having to shoo them away and be quick at covering all the food up.

Yes, I remember mum saying 'aeriated' a lot....meaning worked up! She must have been saying it to dad.

Are you thinking of 'Knotty Knickers' Jane........Mrs Slocombe's pussy in Are You Being Served???

We have beans, beans, beans here too!! I'm sitting here stringing a load to cook and more want picking. :-)

Jane

Jane Report 26 Aug 2013 16:40

Frank ,you are right Twist it was but I tend to say knot lol(don't know why) :-S
Well I have just been a good Mum and done a load of ironing for James .Mind you when it all comes out of his big back pack it will need doing again I'm sure.
He is a bit peeved I think ,as he hadn't been expected to go to Brighton for 2 nights just before flying off to Greece.I think he was only told a week ago that Jess's Gran had booked The Grand Hotel' for all the family including Jess and him.So he has to sort out 'good clothes' too now. Also on Friday before setting off to Brighton he has to take the 2 cats (Jess's) to Folkstone to stay with her Dad who she never sees.
I do hope he looks after them properly as he sounds a bit of a waste of space :-S
Families!!!!!!..Chris is on his way home now ,so I have got his glass ready with some gin in .It just needs the ice and tonic which I will put in as soon as I see him pull up.

I wonder how my Nieces little 4 kittens are doing. They look so cute.Frank I would dearly love to have one ,even 2,but I daren't ,just because of our road.I'm sure she will find good homes for three of them.I think she is keeping one.
Must ring Janice to see how they are.Janice is off on her cruise on Wednesday so will be up to High Dough (doe) now getting packed and sorting the dogs out to go to Kennels. It will be the first time away from little William for so long.I think my BIL will miss him terribly .
Fiona those spoons look good.Have you seen how much the other ones on ebay have gone up to?

Frank do you like Seafood? Just don't eat a bad Mussel :-S.

I need a cup of tea now,my tongue feels like it is stuck to the roof of my mouth :-S

Frank

Frank Report 26 Aug 2013 15:34

Hi all,

Jane is was "getting you knickers in a twist"

I've been informed by Carolyn that tomorrow night we will be going to the seafood restaurant . Thursday night is CURRY night. So I will be alright by then.

Ros came back with another Clematis lunch time. There will soon be more in that patch that she took out <3 <3

Cooled down a bit now. Have picked more beans and given them to the neighbours, with Tomato's and Cucumber . They will be over ripe and woody beans by the time we get back.

Enjoy your curry tonight Jane. :-D :-D Airiated was also used a lot when I was young, so it goes back a long way !!

Fiona, that doesn't sound a lot for those spoons. Might be worth putting a bid on them. Then you will have TWO SETS. !!

If I don't get back on before I go tomorrow 10.30 am. BEHAVE YOURSELVES and I will see you Friday.

Hello everyone,

Thanks for all the pics, Ann very interesting photo's of the workhouse, I shudder when I think of the poor souls who had to live there.
Luckily non of my ancestors ended up there . though I did have a ancestor who died in an old workhouse which was being used as the hospital during that time

Hope everyone got my photo's:-D

We are Still lucky enough to be having good weather :-D :-D , it's not a bank holiday here in Scotland, but as OH works for a English company he is on holiday,

Jane

Jane Report 26 Aug 2013 14:51

Airiated :-D.Now that is an expression that was used in our house when I was young.
Dad would often say Mum was a bit airiated lol.or het up.I'm glad your party was a success Ruby ,it looked great fun :-D
Another expression for airiated was getting your knickers in a knot
:-D
Maths was my least favourite and worst subject at school......I hardly dare say it but I even failed my CSE in it :-S.I remember putting my name on the top of the paper ,looking at the questions and then just sitting there. My result for that was ungraded :-S :-S.I still have trouble with the metric thing.Much prefer Ibs rather than Kilos, and feet and inches instead of Metres and centimetres.I know I am a dinosaur :-S

Chris and Hannah have now gone .I pity Chris having the journey with her as she is just so tearful and angry now .I think he might like a HUGE G&T when he gets home.
I have emptied the cupboard under the sink now ,ready for the new dishwasher.Luckily it was all quite tidy with things in plastic boxes after having to have the floor replaced last year.I can't believe that was just before Christmas.
Like Ruby says where has this year gone !!!!!!
Off to pick those beans now.

Ruby

Ruby Report 26 Aug 2013 14:21

Hello everyone,

Can you believe it's the last week of August already? The years are really flying by now.

Lots of cleaning up to do outside. I've already pulled up most of my tomato plants, but I leave the flowers with seeds that I know the birds will eat. I've had some beautiful goldfinches in the garden; brilliant yellow gold.

Thank you all for your pics. The history of the workhouses is so interesting. We had one at home, and when the Americans came into the war, many were billeted at the old workhouse. Apparently the black Americans were billeted a few miles away, in Nissan huts. I was just a little kid, but can remember that we had to pass the old workhouse to go to school, and there was a window against the road that we could reach. It had slats on the outside, and we would holler 'Hail heil Hitler' through the slats, having no notion of what it meant, and then run like the clappers.

Ann, you asked me about my grandson at Uni. He is going to get an engineering degree of some sort. I'm not up on Higher Ed. Didn't go past Grammar school - wasn't that good a student anyway. Maths was probably my favourite subject.

Frank, if you should see Chief Inspector Foyle in Hastings, tell him I quite fancy him, and I'll hem his overcoat up a bit for him. :-)
Hope you have a good time.

I've got to work in this room today - it's the small bedroom. I had a daybed in here, but gave it away to small GD. They came and got it yesterday, so now everything that I had stored under the bed is exposed, so I've got to find somewhere else to hide it!

I have company coming from England this next weekend - for a month. It's my B-I-L. His wife, my sister, who was less than two years older than I am, passed away 20 ms. ago. They always came to visit us, at least every other year. He came last year, and I really didn't expect him to come again. He's 82 and diabetic - has difficulty walking very far, but is determined to come again, so I will do my best for him. I thought we might go up into the mountains for a day. He's quite content to just sit out in the sun.

We had a grand time at our tea party. Three GD's were unable to come, but there were 12 of us. We laughed a lot and played games - all the prizes were chocolate. Thank you all for your suggestions concerning the scones. I ended up leaving them until that morning, and then wished I hadn't. I tend to get a bit airiated as my mum used to say!

Hope you all have a wonderful week.

Frank ,you and your Curries just don't get on lol.Hopefully by tomorrow things will have stopped running and you will be fine to go off to Hastings.JUST DONT HAVE ANOTHER CURRY WHEN YOU ARE THERE :-S.Or if you do how about a Butter Chicken one.It is so mild .I like that as Curry sometimes has the same effect on me as it does you.Saying that guess what we have for dinner tonight :-D :-D :-D

I have been and ordered a Dishwasher. It will be here tomorrow :-D :-D.So now I need to empty out the cupboard shelves under the kitchen sink as that is where the plumbing bits are for the dishwasher. They have to go through a hole in the side of the cupboard as there is not enough space behind the washer.

Hannah will be off soon.Chris is taking her back to St Albans. She is getting anxious as tomorrow after work she needs to go back to the flat to get her passport and things for Barcelona. Then next week she will have to go and collect all the rest of her belongings. My heart breaks for her :-(.But I know she will be ok in the end.She just has to be strong ,but right now she isn't.
James is getting his things sorted now as he is off on Wednesday. His FLIP FLOPS fit fine :-D.He is flipping and flopping around in them now lol.

It has turned really very hot now,so i'm back in the old shorts.Chris says more beans need to be picked ,so I will do that once he and Hannah have gone.
I need a bite to eat now so will get back later.
I am not having any trouble getting onto the thread at all.

Afternoon All,

Yes, you are a DAB HAND in the kitchen Frank!! :-) I think you better ask for a very mild Chicken Korma tomorrow, hope for the best and take spare pants!!!! :-S

When you mentioned playing football on Wednesday afternoons I remember OH saying that matches were often on a Wednesday afternoon years ago. No floodlights then so they were all played in daylight and we wondered if Wednesday was chosen when many of the shops were shut for half day closing.

We have been for a nice stroll along the quarry trail this morning after OH painted another length of the top trellis on the fence. There were lots of dragonflies about but it was really hot. Now he's gone to a match in Corby with his mates so I'm 'home alone' as Frank would say!!! There are a few craft fairs on though so I might pop out to one a bit later.

We need a new bedside clock as the one we have stopped a couple of days ago (battery one). I wiggled the battery as it was dislodged and it started again and has been going since, but with the wrong time!! It is one that keeps time and changes with the clocks going forward and back by itself. That is the bit that is not working as it should correct itself at 1.00am if it shows the wrong time and that isn't happening now:-|.......more expense!!

Frank Report 26 Aug 2013 12:06

Morning all/Evening Kim AT LAST. I have been trying to get on here since 8.30. If I went 30 pages or more I got the error notice. I gave up and had breakfast, then again to go and pick tomato's and cues, and finally to Shower and shave. It is a right pain in the backside.

Talking of which I still have the screaming HAB DABS So it's the proverbial IMMODIU# sandwich this morning. Can't go away tomorrow with this lot.

The best of it is the first night down Hastings IS CURRY NIGHT !!! How can I get out of that ???

David I wouldn't call myself Jammie Oliver, but I can cook a roast as good as any woman, and in a lot of cases BETTER. (Present Company accepted) lol lol.
In fact apart from fidderly (sp) Menus there's not a lot I can't do in the kitchen.

Ros and Carolyn have popped out to Tesc# to pick up some bits for breakfast's in Hastings, the rest of the time we will eat out. (NO COOKING FOR ME) I will think I am on holiday :-D :-D :-D

Nice bright morning here, and they say it's going to stay fine down south.

Did you see the RAIN and FLOODS in Essex. ?? Back in the early 60s the floods were so bad they were up to the top of SIGN POSTS !!!

Not a lot of action on here this morning, I bet it's because you are either out for the day, can't get on here, or can't be bothered. ;-) ;-)

See you all later if I can get on.

Shorts on today, I might venture into the garden for a read

Ruby, thanks for the photos, I love the blue and purple colours on the table and your lovely hats.......what a good idea !! The food looks delicious......couldn't help zooming in on it....yum, yum.

David that sounds like a real bargain for that price........hope everything soon works ok again. :-)

What an interesting find Fiona! The internet is so useful for finding out about things like that........I can see you doing some more 'rooting' now.

I recently told this thread I bought a used PC off ebay.

The HP printer, scanner, copier I have won't load on to this PC as while I was poorly with this leg the installation disc took a walk,or is stored in the wrong place.

SO,I bought another used one off ebay Just over £30 for the unit plus inks plus installation charge plus carriage.I think that's very fair.

I will give the other PC and printer to a charity shop when I get mobile again.

Hi Everyone,

That's a nuisance with your foot Mel, I hope a bit of rest will make it better. Did all go well with the dog show and do they clear any mess afterwards or do you have to pick it up? I have trouble with the main PC now.....it keeps freezing on some pages!! :-S I hope we don't need a new one too.......it's about 6 years old now, so probably quite old in computer 'age'.

Pat, I always find it quite exciting searching among gravestones for ancestors even though most of mine don't seem to have been able to afford or want to have one! I hope it stays fine for your break.

Mandy, did you get a new paintbrush as well? :-D

Sweet little kittens Jane, will you be having one? :-D :-D Your dishwasher doesn't sound good at all......ours is a Bosch too I think. Dishwashing sounds like a job for James. lol.

We went to Southwell Workhouse today.......massive and quite imposing. It seems the basic idea of the Workhouse was a good idea, but in those times was spoiled by the fact they had no consideration of people's feelings by splitting up families. But then the idea was not to make the Workhouse too comfortable so people wanted to stay!! Also in rthose days labels were attached to people and things were very black and white. According to the Workhouse, those that were too old or couldn't work were the 'BLAMELESS'. Those who could work, but didn't have a job, or wouldn't work were 'IDLE and PROFLIGATE.'

I asked whether the brick walls inside would have been painted like now and was told that they would and with so many workers, the Workhouse would have been repainted with distemper every 6 months or so, so it was very clean. As the inmates did so much of the work, they didn't need many staff either.

Ive noticed that cooking seems to be popular with most of the thread users.

I''m the most basic of cooks.I can use a tin opener or a frying pan or make a decent sandwich.

Or I buy something cooked at Buttie-licious,plenty of choice,or eat in a cafe, again plenty of choice. On a Friday we phone a chippy who deliver a giant well cooked fish and all the chips you could possibly eat plus mushy peas.Ellen has the same. And its delivered fresh cooked to your door in a short time.Thats us stuffed until mid morning Saturday.

My experiment with the frying pan are nothing exotic, the usual ommelette or bacon and eggs. The tin opener is for when I fancy a can of soup, theres plenty of choice.Or for opening tinned fruit or rice or custard.

I wonder if I'd get on Celebrity Chef?
