I've just tried forwarding mine on to you again Shirl.......but they bounced back so I'll send them again in smaller batches......got my fingers crossed! Did anyone try sending me Fiona's pics? :-)

Jane I bet it was the coughing that made you spill your lunch! You'll have to put an old towel across your front. :-) I bet the tomato soup was lovely, nice and soothing as it goes down.

We've got the NEW bin system starting this week. We just have to use 2 big wheelie bins now, 1 for household waste and the other for ALL the recycling stuff. The glass bin and the tins and plastics bin will be collected and taken away. Some folk will have a garden waste big bin too. I must say I've got so used to seperating stuff that it seems a shame to mucky up all the nice clean newspapers with the tins and plastics!

Pork and leek sausages mustard mash and cabbage for us tonight.

Oh went out ringing again tonight so I had a potter about and put some straw under my strawberry plants in the tunnel. They have some quite big berries on some plants.

My Gunnera has tried to come up twice this year but it keeps getting cut down by frost. If it is still alive I think I may have to move it.

Ann, I saw that about the Gypsy Horse fair and nearly had a fit.I would not want to be there then.We are only there for 2 nights and come home on the 30th.I think we are staying just outside the town .Can't remember the name of the hotel but will ask Chris in a minute (he is just doing me some Tomato Soup :-D.I made a right mess with my lunch and got it all over the bed :-S so I think my soup will be in a mug and not a bowl lol.
Your photos are just brilliant ,i have been looking at them again this afternoon.

I have been sat here in bed watching 4 horses having a right old frolic together .Last burst of energy before they are stabled for the night.

Yes, that's ANOTHER thing he won't let me live down. lol :-D You have done well getting those bargain bulbs. Lupins are a favourite I remember being in the garden when I was little. I love the flowers on them that are 2 colours.

Heck Jane, the Appleby Horse fair is the first week in June (the 6th this year)..........not going to that to get your fortune told are you? The place will be swarming with travellers and gipsies from all over then!! I wonder when they start to arrive for it?? Me and my sister used to fancy going years ago to see all the gipsy horses and horsedrawn caravans, but having seen some of it on tv I'm not sure I would like it now. I think there is a stop off there on the Settle Carlisle rail trip. Well, it's not like you to be taking to your bed so you must be feeling proper ropey. Best just to rest and potter like you are doing. Has your BIL got over it yet?

OH has gone to a meeting out in the sticks near Melton now. It is a pretty village and I used to go there sometimes in my job. It has 'slow' signs for 'ducks crossing'. It was a nightmare finding places there as none of the houses put their numbers on the gate or on the house. Most used just a name, so you had no idea which end of a road a house was. I went in fog once and ended up parking the car and walking up and down for ages and going up driveways looking for names.......happy days!!

I got my car washed in the village by the Polish chaps while I was out......they do such an excellent job for £6 and are so quick as well.

Maureen the big leaf photo was of a Gunnera plant just starting to regrow. They grow massive, tall enough to walk underneath the huge leaves in the summer. It's like giant Rhubarb and there is a huge valley of it there!! lol. One of the Bamboos they have grows up to 8 inches a day in height the first 7 days after it emerges from the soil, then it slows down till it reaches approx 6 metres ( over 20 feet high) in 60 to 90 days. I'm glad it isn't in my garden, you'd need an axe to keep it in check.

I'm off out again now.........to M*S on the retail park just down the road.

Poor Jane. I hope you feel better soon. You must have picked that up while you were away I should think.

Suns over the yard arm.

This phrase is widely used, both afloat and ashore, to indicate that the time of day has been reached at which it is acceptable, variously, to have lunch or (more commonly) to have an alcoholic beverage. In modern parlance, the latter usage typically refers to early evening, but the phrase is thought originally to have referred to late morning and to the sun's ascent past a particular yard.

My dad used this term sometimes in fun as he did'nt drink. The yard was on the mast of a ship to hold the square sails.

Mel Fairy Godmother

Mel Fairy Godmother Report 21 May 2013 17:36

Not till the sun is over the yardarm.

Jane Report 21 May 2013 15:57

Still in bed :-S I'm getting fed up now.I can't remember the last time I spent a whole day in bed like this.I did get up just now as I hadn't fed the birds. But by the time I got back here I was knack****.It's a Virus Maureen which as produced a really mucky cough and achy limbs.Haven't even had a wash :-0 :-0 :-0

I found out where we are going next week .It's Appleby in Westmorland .I think it is a fair way from the lakes but as I'm just here doing nothing I will look it up and see just exactly where it is.
Can't talk anymore,my fingers have gone wobbly lol

Terrific photos Ann, everyone with a wow factor. Was that a tree with the enormous leaf, fantastic.

Hope you are feeling a bit better now Jane, so miserable having a cold or maybe it's flu.

I must still be in holiday mode when I get home because I usually open a bottle of wine, not if it's still morning though. What's that expression something about over the yardarm.

I couldn't stop laughing at the Rolf Harris joke Frank :-D

We have chickweed in the greenhouse Mel. It breaks off so easily if you try to pull it out and unless you get all the root out it just grows back. Mum's chickens used to love it and my canaries loved it as well. I cut open old compost bags and put the flat sheets around the tomatoes which helps to keep it down..........it also keeps the moisture in around the tomatoes. I suppose when we dig we bring new seeds to their ideal depth to grow. If we plant old seed it won't grow, but weed seeds in the soil seem to be able to last for years!!!

Lunch was lovely so I'm off to the PO and garden centre down the road now.

OH was laughing today!! I set off to the shops ahead of him in Nuneaton yesterday. I was listening to a voicemail on my phone which was about last week's class being later than the usual time when I spotted S*ecsavers and remembered OH wanted his glasses tightening. As I started to write him a text to remind him, he appeared so I switched my phone offt. Today when he switched his phone on there was a text from me. It just said a capital letter V. He wanted to know today whether I was telling him to clear off!!!! lol. Somehow I must have pressed send when I was switching it off but gawd knows where the V came from!! lol.

Mel Fairy Godmother

Mel Fairy Godmother Report 21 May 2013 12:21

Ann thats also the trouble when you dig!! It always beats me how weed seedling don't get eaten by slugs and snails whereas your flower seeds do! :-|

I always have masses of chickweed in the tunnel but I am ready for it this year on one bed. I have watered it well and have a piece of black poly that goes right over it. Just wait till they try to rear their ugly heads and hit the polythene that will make them die!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! then I can plant in there hopefully a bit more weed free. The chickens enjoy the chickweed though.

How did your seedlings travel? Had they grown while you were away?

Annx Report 21 May 2013 11:20

Yes it's a lovely pic of Matteo Fiona, he looks so relaxed. No sunshine here but I think we are due some tomorrow so more washing to put on tonight and out on the rotary in the morning.

Oh Jane, stay in bed!! You don't sound well at all. At least getting it now you should hopefully be feeling a lot better for your Lake District trip!

Yes naughty Frank taking your aspirin on an empty tummy. :-| I told OH off yesterday because he took his I*uprofen quarter of an hour before his lunch instead of waiting till it was ready. Is it a 'man' thing? We have the smallest D*son (not an upright) just for our hard floors, but it doesn't suck very well and I usually need the dry mop after. We use the very light O*eck on the carpets.

I have planted the lettuce and leeks now and pricked out a load of Livingstone Daisy seedlings and weeded both the island beds in the middle. We have loads of that short grass that almost looks black and is hard to see against the soil but has seeds by the time it is half an inch high!! I want to keep on top of it this year before the seeds are spread. I think shifting all the soil about last year has moved lots of weed seeds to fresh places!!

He is actually on the couch Mel, his favourite sleeping place, it won't be long till he is starting to move about on his own. and daughter will have to put him in the cot for his naps. but at the moment he is safe , we make sure that someone is always in the room, I don't like leaving him on his own, anyway when he wakes up he is always a bit grumpy and doesn't know where he is. :-D
