*$parkling $andie* Report 16 May 2009 18:56

Hi Diane
Did you mean to give the chap's age to me ?
lol Jackie's gone to bed , I asked the question.
Very sad isn't it, they are lucky they have someone as caring as you to help.
My dad had carers in the last few yrs of his life ( NOT FULL tIME )
Two of them were marvellous and ended up being good friends.
I'm sure you're work is well appreciated:)

Yes, I do - but in places there's still limited support.

Day care places seem to be being cut back, and respite care facilities.

Diane it was heartbreaking to see new patients, who were told by family they were going into the homes for a few weeks to give relatives a break, find out their home had been sold to pay the bond and they were there for good.
I saw drugs signed out but sold on the street instead of being given to palliative patients. When it was found out it was hushed up in case families moved patients elsewhere. That's not the half of it, it's a dirty industry .

Diane

Diane Report 16 May 2009 18:51

Hey ladie's I seemed to have turned Sue's thread into a carer's one, sorry I suppose we should return to working out Daff's one...lol

I'm back for a few minutes.

I often wonder how the parents of the kids I teach will cope as they get older - they all have learning difficulties and will never be able to live unsupported.

That's sad Daff, through my own experiance of being a carer it is alway's better that the disabled and the aged are and do better in their own home's. They are happier with care in the home, the old tend to give up when they go into nurseing home's and people like the one I care for just become withdrawn unless they have the right kind of stimulation

Most private carers work only a few hours a week in any one house because that's all the family can afford.
Contrary to popular propaganda there is a lot of poverty in Australia. Most people choose to ignore it.
The bond for admission to a private aged care home is typically $250,000 refundable a year after the patient dies. These places have long waiting lists.
Government homes have no bond but the list is much longer. There are regular scandals about abuse in the private homes. I worked in 3 and what I saw would stand your hair on end, I had to get out of aged care.

Jackie, he's only 42yrs and he is like a little boy of twelve in height but like a man in body, he can't feed himself or talk but he has his own way of letting you know thing's, so he need's every thing done for him, it's just like haveing a baby only the size of a teenager.

Daphne Report 16 May 2009 18:33

There are carers working in private homes but the patient's family have to pay them, The accepted idea is still to put patients in institutions if parents choose not to they are pretty much on their own. Some help is available depending on circumstances and it varies from state to state but often disabled children end up in aged care establishments because there is nowhere else.
Care of the aged is the same, with long waiting lists and huge bonds to get in.

Well Daff that's an eye opener, I would have thought Aus would be like here if not better. I suppose a lot of parent's end up putting their disabled people in institutions or worse still leaving them for the state to bring them up. I don't mean to sound harsh when I say that but it would be very hard for them to cope if they were on their own and didn't have any family support, that's awful Daff

I'm back .lol
Missed Jackie going ....Sweet dreams Jack and take care tomorrow !
Where are we..?
P R , S N and J P a 3 of B P B K A C..?

How old is the chap you care for Diane.?

Diane

Diane Report 16 May 2009 18:25

Do you mean they don't have carer's comeing into the home to help with the disabled, how do they manage if there is only one parent. If his mum didn't have me then she would be unable to have him at home it would probably put her in her grave within a short time..

Daphne

Daphne Report 16 May 2009 18:24

There are some but they are funded mainly by public donations and fund raising and there are nowhere near enough places to meet demand.
The Melbourne Children's Hospital is funded much the same way.

Diane

Diane Report 16 May 2009 18:20

do they have daycare centre's in Aus Daff for the disabled ?

Daphne

Daphne Report 16 May 2009 18:19

Australian parents get a Carer's Pension to stay home and care for the child but they seem to get little or no help to pay for a respite carer to give them a break.
Our health system leaves a lot to be desired.
