I've just googled Russian space flights and this is my final answer

the Russian Dog Laika Orbited the Earth in 1957.

It's a fact according to wiki , but I don't know if it is the answer to Daff's question.lol

I've spent about half an hour looking "stuff" up - but nothing helps.

Obviously Daphne's definition of "not too hard" doesn't extend to me!
