My cousin's story like most family tales, may hold an element of truth. Her mother told her that grandad was from a wealthy family, but was the black sheep and changed his name.

My contender did not come from a wealthy family but his parents were in service to a wealthy family (two, in fact). One of the families in the 1861 census (where his mother was housekeeper) was the Sherriff of Leicestershire. Meanwhile, in the same census, his father was up in Manchester, as a Butler to a German cloth merchant.. (to be continued)

Seriously though, most stories hold some truth, and it's being open minded enough to separate the wheat from the weeds.

I usually find, that you just get a hunch that it's the right person, and it usually is!

It gets better. In 1871 the whole family, Mum, Dad, daughter and son are in Manchester where dad is now a beer and provisions supplier.

From then on, no trace of the son, William (the great contender). I've checked FreeBMD and there are no deaths for William between 1871 and 1904 (the year of my grandparent's marriage). There is a William in 1891 in Oldham who is a beer and Wine provider; he is the right age but his birthplace is given as Oldham. My contender was born at Skeffington. TBC :-D
