Duplicate ancestors

This is not so much a suggestion as a query. How can duplicate entries be removed from a tree, without removing the person and his or her relations altogether? I have some people who appear three times, sometimes floating around in space as if ostracised by the rest of the family. If I add information, I have to add it to each entry, as there appears to be no linkage between them. This is extremely time consuming and frustrating.
I realise that this is probably caused by some error of mine in the past, or possibly by uploading a gedcom, but how do I put it right?

Hi June

I expect the reason you've not had a reply is because you should have put your query on the Genealogy Chat board.

This one is for making suggestions TO Genes.

Good luck

If you have a question for GR staff, such as this for example, it is best to use the email address ........

[email protected]

However, as nameslessone says, there are very knowledgeable members on Genealogy Chat who may well know how to remove you free floating ancestors.

I think the GR tree is based on everyone being related to everyone else. If you import a GEDCOM made by another program then that may allow unrelated people to be included.

The GR tree sometimes displays the same person twice even though that person is a single entry in the database. That happens, for example, when cousins marry. So before you do anything make sure that is not the case.

For duplicated people you really need to decide which one has the most information (and children) and keep that person and delete the other person and any offspring (who will have to be deleted first).

Any unlinked people can usually be joined to their correct partner by using the Find Existing function when you add a spouse.

Don't add the same information to duplicated people, that is wasted effort.
