Sex of child

In the 1911 census there is an entry for no. of children who died, no sex or names given. I have just guessed by adding male or female. Why not add unknown?
Also where a couple had no children add "childless" to save further checks.

How on earth would anyone now add to the 1911 Census??

The question was not asked!!

It just cannot be done.

Nor was the question asked re the sex of any living child.

If no number is entered then it means that there were no children to that marriage ...... the form was after all filled in by the head of the household!

You should also realise that the question was not children born to the marriage, but children born to the WIFE, and sometimes may include children she had to a previous partner.

You can solve the problem for your own tree by doing the following. You do have to register but it is free .....

Go to the new GRO Index
https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/

Click on Order Certificates online

Click on Order Certificate Online and the GRO historic birth and death indexes

LogIn (or Register if it is your first visit)

Click on Search Indexes

Click on Births

Fill in father's surname
Fill in mother's surname

select sex (you HAVE to do this)

select year +/-2

and see what happens ..........................

if a child was born and took a breath before dying it SHOULD be registered. You can identify the ones you know about, and see if there are any "unknowns"

Then click on death, and see if you can find a death for the "unknown" child.

BTW ........... it odes no good posting on this Board ................. GR staff no longer check here, it is up to one or two members like myself who keep an eye on it for posters like yourself so we can direct them to where they MIGHT be able to help
