I wish to thank everyone for all their efforts and kindness in trying to solve my problem. I am living in Holland at the moment so I am limited to researching online until I can get the chance to go to England visiting family.

I hope the following answers all questions put to me. I apologise if I have unintentionally ignored anyone.

Marriage Cert - Occupation of father (James) - Miner
Birth Cert - Occupation of father (William) - factory hand
Birth Cert - Mothers name - Ann - maiden name is difficult to read but I think is Allivant or Ollivant - will need to investigate this more

I will need to investigate everything further and really put my logical head on
Thanks to everyone and I will keep you posted

The use of two MS's is a bit odd - maybe Ann was a widow when she wed William.

Well, I was full of enthusiasm cos I was brought up in New Mills and live only 4 miles away, but I have to admit I am stuck. New Mills is full of Shufflebottoms/Shufflebothams of all shapes and sizes. No luck from me. Sorry. No father James showing up. William is more likely.

Coming to the conclusion he didn't know his father's name for sure.

Do you think Fanny's find is correct?

Did the birth cert give an occupation for the father?

1871
SHUFFLEBOTTOM, William Head M 45 1826 Derbyshire (New Mills)Stone mason
SHUFFLEBOTTOM, Ann Wife F 43 1828 Lancashire
SHUFFLEBOTTOM, Jane Daughter F 25 1846 Cheshire
SHUFFLEBOTTOM, Thomas Son M 22 1849 Cheshire(Hyde) Coal miner.

Maybe his fathers name was William James/James William ,many people alternated their names...

Of course the occupations of father from both certs may give a clue to it being the same man......

Father on the census is definatly showing as William on the census

Im wondering if He (dad) middle name was William & his 1st name James

My 2x Gt G/Dad on his M/C & all the census was down as William but we could never find his birth.....It turned out he was registered at birth as Samuel & William was his middle name

Think you need to find him on 1851/ 1861 census to see if he is living with his father.

Elaine Report 30 May 2010 21:25

I am trying to find whether I have the correct birth certificate for my gg-grandfather Thomas Shufflebottom. He married Elizabeth Higton in 1872 and gave his fathers name on the marriage certificate as James Shufflebottom. His age was given as 'full age' so I checked the 1901 census which gave his age as 52 and his death certificate in 1906 gives his age as 56 so that would make his date of birth as 1849/1850. His place of birth on the 1901 census was quoted as Hyde, Cheshire.

I found what appeared to be the correct birth index Year: 1849 / Q2 Jun / District: Stockport / Vol: 19 / Pge: 325, so I ordered the certificate. However, when I checked it, the fathers name is shown as William Shufflebottom. So I decided to check other census to see if there was any discrepency there.

1891 & 1881 census shows place of birth as New Mills, Derbyshire but other people shown seem to match - 1871 & 1851 (cannot find him in 1861) I found a Thomas Shufflebottom of the right age but with the father as William Shufflebottom. I wonder if I have the right birth certificate or was he wrong when he gave his fathers name as James.

I have checked what parish records there are on Ancestry but have found no match. Does anyone know where I can check next to see which information is correct.

Anyones assistance would be much appreciated.
