Find Ancestors

Does anyone know if Stananought Street and Stananought Cottages were close to each other?. In the 1871 census I havea Tipping family living at 27 Stananought Cottages and there's a Jones family living at 8 Stananought Street that I'm trying to connect to the Tippings. Anyone have an old Liverpool map?

It's usually the norm Cottages like that take their name from the street they are on. They maybe stepped back from the actual street and have a courtyard of their own.

Can you give me the full family names as i cannot find that street on the census.

The family at 8 Stananought Street is Robert Jones (b. 1840 Holywell, N. Wales) married to Elizabeth (b. 1849 Anglesey). The family at 27 Stananought Cottages is John and Ellen Topping (it should be Tipping but it's definitely the correct family).

In the 1881 census the Jones family is living at 13 Violet Street which seems to be next to Stananought Street. (I might have the spelling of Stananought wrong too - not easy to decipher.

In ancestry.com 1891 England Census house nos. 23-42 Gordon Terrace, Garston are named Stananought Cottages. My eldest daughter has ancestors at No.24, her gtx2 grandfather's brother William Henry Drew & family.

Just been looking up this cottages you mention redkop on the 1881
They are Aigburth/mossley hill end.
In fact they seem to have been around Carnatic road and elmswood road(which someone called elmswood st earlier)
Also which is interesting is
There are actualy two familys living at the end of the Stananought Cottages
in carnatic road named Stananoughton
Also George terreces are at the end of the cottages.
As you will know being a exgarstoite
Carnatic road runs from north mossley hill road to Victoria road and into sefton park
Elmswood road runs from the cotinuation of Rose lane down towards the park over Aigburth vale
If this is correct.
I think the cottages may have been situated along mossley hill roar north
Possible where the carnatic halls of residence are now.
As most of the old buildings still survive along mossley hill road north
Needless to say all are now rest homes

Caught my eye when you mentioned Stananought Terrace as I have heard of it.
My relatives, Thomas Scarisbrick lived there in 1877, number 30. My dad was born and bred in Grassendale, and he said it sounds like its the far end of Aigburth?
In 1877 the address was
30, Stananought Terrace
Toxteth Park
Liverpool

First of all Stananought Cottages were not in Garston, but in Aigburth. They were in the what used to be the old village of Aigburth in Aigburth Vale, these houses locally known as the `Terraces`, were demolished about 1965.
I used to live in 18 Gordon Terrace until they were demolished. Gordon Terrace was divided by an alleyway which we used to call `The Entry`. One half was numbered 1-22 and the top half numbered 23-42, this half used to be called Stananought Cottages pre 1905. So named after a local dignitary

Thanks everyone. I've read the roots ref. and there does seem to be a lot of the cottages. Now I just have to connect the cottages to Stananought Street - any takers?
