Hi Dea,

Thanks for taking a look for me.

John Brace certainly is a mystery. His birth should be recorded somewhere but nothing shows.

I am not at all sure whether if there had been a bigamous marriage whether it would be annulled and if so the record (Registration) expunged from the register. I will try to take a look at back copies of the Lichfield Mercury just in case any prosecution for bigamy is recorded.

The the rest of the unruly bunch. I think that the person who confessed their sins on GR today probably had what I call a Gerald Ratner moment. Genes R Us sounds good.

Hi Jonesey,

Had a little look at this for you while grandson was having his afternoon nap but I amafraid I haven't come up with anything as yet.

I can't see a marriage for your Florence to a Mr. Brace and I can't see any Army records for a Mr Brace who might fit the bill of John's father.

You could try local papers of the time as if he was a bigamist, he may well have been convicted and there might be a report of the trial?

This does not explain though why we can't find a birth for John under that name?

There are a couple of John Evans births around that time with mmn Evans??

I will take another look later when I have taken little grandson home.

Now that everyone has breakfasted and hopefully recovered from their personal injuries and catastrophes is anybody up for a bit of genealogical thought?

I have a chap in my extended family tree who is a bit of a mystery. His name was John Brace who died on 7/11/1944. As far as I know he was the son of a great aunt of mine whose birth name was Florence Hilda Evans. When I was growing up in the 1950's she had a photograph of him in uniform on her mantlepiece. At that time auntie Flo (1892~1986) was a widow whose surname by then was Blundell having married under her maiden name in 1932. As far as I am aware she spent her entire life in and around Lichfield, Staffordshire.

The story that I recall being told was that John was the product of an earlier marriage which ended when it was discovered that the man she married (John's father) was a bigamist. Whether this was true or simply a story invented I do not know but I have never been able to find any record of such a Brace/Evans marriage. More frustratingly I have never been able to discover a possible birth record for John under the surname of Brace or Evans with a mothers maiden name Evans.

The death record indicates that John was 26 years old when he died implying a birth c1918. I have a photograph taken c1930 of John together with my uncle who was born in 1920 and judging by their respective sizes I would say that a birth in 1917/8 would be about right. Here are John's death records:

CWGC

UK Army Roll of Honour 1939~1945
Name: John Brace
Given Initials: J
Rank: Sapper

Birth Place: Staffordshire

With the combined brain power of those who contribute to this thread can anyone come up with any suggestions as to how I can find out more about John's origin.
