Jax

Dropped the in Spain for two reasons - had loads of pm s asking where in Spain I was - not that I minded but a lot of messages in in box

Also with all this googling stuff - I found if you had a unique name - like ireneinspain Sylviaincanada etc - it comes up straight away

But if you have a common name like Irene dea Cynthia etc - they are lost in the search

Fanny is the exception - there are millions of fbg as there are janeycanucks - real characters or persons

So in end just kept with Irene - although there are several on here

Well, I'm blowed! After what we've been talking about, I just, this minute, opened this pm.

Cynthia,

Your message was a great help to a beginner of the message board. I have not yet mastered the 'thread' way of doing things but with practice I will.

Isn't that nice?

Grief, you can't 'alf waffle Fans. Been on the voddie or somefink???

Hello Patricia, of course you may join us but beware....we are all slightly mad/eccentric/crazy/dolally etc. with some exceptions of course.

I don't know whether I should admit this or not.....the scenario so touchingly told by our Janey......could have been me. I was exactlly the same when I joined here. I doodled around with my tree and Hot Matches and search trees but didn't know a Community board from an elephant's left ear.

Mind you - JC - being slightly (much) brighter than me, caught on far quicker and soon weighed into the fray. I can remember her posting in a previous incarnation and thought how clever this person was - must have been around for donkey's years - hahahaha. Then I used to see messages about her being on holiday and I used to think "lucky girl"....ha.

I hovered around, dipped my toe into the water and got told off for doing summat wrong.........listen....I was confused, I was new.....I was an ignoramus.....gimme a break.

Ja...x - I had never even heard of freebmd/igi etc. until I was well into posting on here.

Will have to get a meal soon.....not in the mood.

And long may it Reign...mean, Remain.

Where you been then Pat?

See you on TTF all the time, how can you not have noticed this rabble before now?

You will need the patience of a Saint and a skin like a rhino if you loiter here long.

Only one rule on here really.

Play nicely .....

Ginny is away in Geneva no less at the mo so we welcome you in her absence......and that is why it is also so quiet on here at the mo as our Motor Mou..............Um lovely Ginnykins is on her hols....

Edits.
But there are a few Patricias on here so I dont know which one you are now.

A slight add on to ones name to be able to tell apart would be a help instead of having to click on names for surnames..

Just a suggestion,,,I shut up now...

I see someone replied to his own four year old post today!!

The infomation he found took two minutes on freebmd, I assume people did'nt reply on the boards back then?

Has anyone wondered why one person would need so many probate/will look ups, I have not found one ancestor that left any money, probably only debts

FannyByGaslight Report 13 Sep 2010 15:46

I answer a post of one of my unusual surnames on TTF just now ,very few come up with that one,in fact the last one was in 2007 .

But they are one of the post it and run sort and I am going to be unable to access a computer easily from tomorrow for a few days...Sobs...

Will leave a message to that affect methinks...

Edits, that was for Joy not JC,but on reflection....

Te He.
At least I dint fall foul of the surnames board(I think, long time back now)But found the community boards quickly being of the nosey kind.
Watched chat for a while and was horrif..........Um decided not to join in.
Gen,not quite so bad but when I did add a reply to anything was completely ignored so decided to post a TTF...
And well,the rest is history..:))

jax -- taking the high road can be very satisfying. Self-satisfying. ;)

And it does ensure that you don't have somebody gunning for your posts in future!

Yes, the main culprit for the post-dredging is the surname-filter function. But it isn't just that people use the filter. It's that they go straight to their "surname board" from the emails GR sends them. They don't even know there is a whole big board. In fact ... and shush now ... it was two years before I realized that.

I'd only used the site to put up a family shrub and do tree searches and contact possible relations, and I'd followed those surname-board links in my emails from GR, and browsed through the posts for my surnames (well, the ones that had any posts), and seen all the old junk and nothing much else. I even posted a couple of times re surnames for which there weren't boards, creating a board in the process -- and had no idea that my posts were being seen by the general public (none of whom paid any attention to my posts anyway -- so I still didn't get any clue that they were being seen). It's just lucky I didn't go replying on the board to any 5-yr-old posts! I would have been branded moron forever. ;)

It wasn't until 2007 when I idly decided to click on the "Community" button (I've never been drawn to the idea of "communities" at web sites) that I saw all these boards ... chat, general, the history boards ... and was amazed.

Whence my empathy for the poor souls trapped in the caves of their surname boards.

Well it just goes to show ----------------something

Someone had to pay 9.95 just to write on my thread

Mind you it cost 3 e to past her copies of docs re the said Auntie

And we cannot find how - 2 girls came to Uk in 1870 ties

one working for a Lieutenant as ladies maid - the other for The Hambro family - also as ladies maid

Weird

Perhaps they smuggled in their ladies maids
