It's not 'quite' wet here Cynths but it is certainly threatening to be - It is cold and grey and very windy.

I have ironing to do too but it will only make me feel miserable as I HATE ironing. - Will save it for tomorrow and hope the sun shines!

I DO wish I was more like you and could actually enjoy doing these horrible things.

Well get orf your 'proverbial' and do something then - like your own ironing for starters!

Huh....some people!

I will brighten my ironing time by listening to a good story......got a Dalziell and Pascoe one going at the mo. James Patterson is a favourite. Tops is Agatha Christie. Funny, can't read her books but can listen to them no prob.

Hi Renes, that's interesting about your contact and just shows how crazy this site is at times.

It's been my experience that most of those who reply to old messages are those who have used the filter box at the side, popped in the name they are looking for and found messages from other people with the same name. They then type a reponse in the hope that there is a connection but don't take notice of the date the message was posted.

They tend to be really new to the site and don't realise that their message appears on the public board and are surprised to get a complete stranger giving them advice!

Several are doing 'one-name studies' and I've just replied to one .......look at the following........[this gentleman had replied to several old threads bearing the same name and several helpers had told him that he was unlikely to get a reply. I then sent him a message so that he would see that advice]

Hi Cynthia,
I know we are not related but thought that you might not have the information that I sent you and was offering to give any help that I could I have about 19 trees for the family name so there wes a good chance that I had the information that you wanted.

I'm still slightly confused but have tried my best to point him in the right direction!

Our Janey has made some good suggestions to the management, but whether they will take heed remains to be seen.

Is it wet where you are Dea? It's really miserable here so may cheer myself up by doing the ironing!! :)))

Dea Report 13 Sep 2010 13:12

Hi Renes,

Yes, I did realise what you were meaning but it just puzzled me at the time why she had to pay to read the message.

Are you having a nice restful day?

Dea

If you take the of the name from any thread you have worked on and Google it - you will find the thread and you can enter back to that thread -

When you click to enter GR it knows from your IP (internet protocol number assigned to your computer) that your are a member - as I understand it

I have asked non members to google my names put on TTF and they can not get in unless they pay - to either respond on thread or pm me - by clicking on my name

I was really pointing out - that people seeking help do not necessarily come to boards via community

So they cannot read any of the Advise postings

Dea Report 13 Sep 2010 12:24

That's strange Renes,

Whenever I have googled and it has come up with a link to a GR message, I have gone straight to it without paying??

Dea x

AAhh - perhaps 'google' knows I am already a member? - It knows where I live as it tells me my postcode and puts up 'local info' in my searches!!!

Clever isn't it? - But I don't think I like it knowing so much!!

Cyn

Re responding to old threads - I am sure you do know this but I did not -

I had a posting on one of my old threads - and responded - as you do - (she had a sister she thought to my German aunt )

I said I would pm her my emails address to send her photos and German death certs etc

she asked whats pm and told her (thinking she did not know the abbreviation)

A month passes - and we have emailed quite a bit - and I said one day why have you not put the sisters on your tree yet

She replied What is a TREE - I emailed and said on the GR site ( thinking good grief)

She told me this - she Googled my Aunts name - saw my GR posting - clicked and GR says to see this info - you need to pay 9.95 - which she did

And it opened onto my thread directly - and she wrote her posting

leaving the post bookmarked to get back -

and had then followed my instructions to Messages - and voila - emailed me

She had not seen any other instruction - help - advise - nothing - paid 9.95 and straight on to thread !!!!!!

I am wondering now if all these postings to 6 year old threads etc are coming from internet searches or they are clicking on names on Google and landing up on the boards after paying

No wonder there is confusions !!!!!!

The wanderer has returned!! Welcome back dear friend and what a story you had to tell. I knew you would bring some sanity back onto here.

Ja...x - I've had several similar messages since I started sending out my messages several years ago and it can be really unsettling can't it? Sometimes it's a case of "who are you and why are you sending me a message?" or "don't tell me how things work, I've been a member since Adam was a lad!" Oh yeah, well how come you're replying to a 6 year old post then?

Basically most of it is down to the fact that many folk have not grasped how this site works, and when they are told, they feel stupid and so become defensive. This does not, however, excuse any rudeness but, unfortunately, that is how many people react when they are put in that position.

I've learnt a lot from JC (but don't tell her for fear of halo - itis) about the shortcomings of this site. It has a lot to answer for.

You press on doing what you are very good at and be thankful for all the nice folk who say 'Thank you'. Put the others behind you.

Just going to phone one of my bestest friends but am putting it off slightly. She is quite a bit older than me but we have a lot in common and have been friends for many years. Unfortunately, she is suffering from 'mild depression' but she is certainly not the person she was. I am concerned there is more to it than is said. Her OH let the word 'dementia' slip out the other day and I am sad. So sad.

Welcome back Sylvia,

We have SO missed you!

Robert has been feeding us in your absence and he has the menu sorted 'till Friday so you can take a few days to 'get yourself sorted' before you resume your duties. (That was thoughtful of him wasn't it??)

Anyway, it sounds like you have had an exciting time - Glad we don't have bears in our garden - I would never leave the house (tee hee).

Just popped in for my 'bacon and eggs' - thank you Robert they were delicious !! - I only had one lot today as I was still a bit full from yesterday !

Will pop back later and help with the washing up !

I think she thinks I am related in some way and not sharing my info? As I said before she wanted me to post it again but would not say why the thread had gone. If she had been honest and said sorry I deleted by accident, I would have helped but, she has said she has not recieved my 1st pm advising her to return to her thread and to remove her email.
Anyway she does not want me to contact her, but if she makes comments like that I am going to reply.
I think she has got info from hot matches as there have not been any other posts

Thanks JC

my daughter is almost compulsive about food ............ if it MIGHT be off, she throws it out.

She did learn one lesson .... didn't do it this time, but will remember next time.

When there is a power outage, switch things around in your fridge.

Remove fruit and veggies etc from the veggie drawer, they could even last outside the fridge.

Move perishables to the coldest area of the fridge .......... if you have a top freezer, move perishables up close to the top. If you have a bottom freezer, move them down to the lower shelves, even into the veggie drawers.

Finally, what she did do ................. don't open your fridge door unless it is absolutely essential so that the cold air remains trapped inside.

Nice to see you back sylv hope you had a good time

Just thought I would post my last reply from this person, which is making me wonder where she go her help from as I had posted at least three generations of her family in the early hours of the morning and it had gone before lunch time.

Thank you for your email.

I will take your advice on board regarding asking other people for help in tracing my ancestors. Fortunately, they, (unlike yourself) are willing to help and I have moved on quite a bit since posting my initial message. They have been more than willing to share information and used my personal email address.

Please do not reply to this message - I really do not wish to correspond with you.

And a fine one it was!

Had been waiting to hear about the Nova Scotia people, as the storm did hit pretty hard. A day without hydro isn't the end of the world, but it means this wasn't a trifling breeze. What a shame to lose a big tree.

Throw out the yogourt? Why not eat it ... ;)

Blast, I can never remember how to spell yo__t in English.
