Meanwhile, yesterday in Vancouver was the wettest EVER August day .............. about 55.8mm rain officially, that's about 10x the normal average rainfall. It was also apparently the 16th wettest day ever in any season.

Add to that, the high temperature for the day was around 15C.

The sun is out again today, and the temperature is rising!

Janey .... I used tro really like familyhistoryonline as well, found lots of stuff on there.

J phoned this morning to have a quick chat ............ not only will we be away at the weekend, but they are preparing themselves in Nova Scotia for the possibility that Hurricane Earl will hit on Saturday. We'll have to listen to the radio to find out what happens, but we are keeping our fingers crossed.

Hurricane Juan hit as a category 2 back in 2004 and did a lot of damage to buildings, ships and trees, etc, although I believe that no-one was even seriously injured, fortunately. Earl was downgraded to a category 3 this morning, and might be a category 1 or 2 before reaching NS and/or Newfoundland. It may drop even as low as a tropical storm ..... which will still mean torrential rain

J said they are going out this evening to stock up on foods, especially canned, and to make sure the car petrol tank is filled up.

They lost a lot of frozen food back in 2004 when the electricity was out for several days, and they also hadn't got a full tank in the car ............ petrol stations weren't working with no electricity, so that was a problem! M is also going to make sure that they have 2 full propane tanks for the bbq .... so they have learnt some lessons!

M went back to school on Monday ...... staff training and preparation for 3 days, then the kids return tomorrow (Thursday). HOWEVER, it has been so hot this week that school might be cancelled after today ........ it has been registering 35C and over, but the Humidex factor (due to humidity) means that it has effectively been over 40C ......... and schools are not air conditioned.

J said the temperature is supposed to still be high on Saturday when Earl might hit ... that would be miserable!! 100% humidity, 100+kmh winds, etc etc.

Please think of her if you hear anything on the news about Earl ..... "south shore of Nova Scotia" would mean that there would be some effect on Halifax.

Jonesey

Jonesey Report 1 Sep 2010 19:24

Moving items around regularly in retail establishments is done for a very good reason (For the retailer that is).

If a customer knows exactly where to look for the item they have come in to buy they make straight for where they believe it to be. Customers rarely notice anything else that they pass on the way. By moving the products location the retailer ensures that the customer notices at least one other item that is available which is now in the original items place. As the customer then searches for whatever it was that they came in for they then see numerous other items which they may previously have passed without even noticing them.

If the customer came in for a specific item then in most cases they will continue searching for that item until they find it. By the time they do they will have seen many other items and may well have been tempted to buy some of them as well.

Result, possibly an aggravated customer but usually, more money in the till which is what the retailer really wants.

Ginny - removal orders - I found mine at the defunct familyhistoryonline.net - transcription of the basic details. Then I got a photocopy from the Wiltshire Records Office.

I think familyhistoryonline.net sold its stuff to FMP. A real loss. It was the collaborative effort of family history societies, which put up their transcriptions, and for something like 8p you could view a result from a search.

I didn't bother copying a lot of stuff, my Cornwall Bond ancestors going back to the 1500s ... or I did, then used it to print work on the back of and recycled it ... because I figured it would just always be there. Unfortunately, I don't think all of the records are available at the Cornwall OPC site, good as it is, so I'm kinda screwed and would have to do it all over again somehow. But I know I'm related to 007 -- or at least I'm truly part of the family he only claimed to be part of! -- so ... there. ;)

For the removal order, though, it was just serendipity. I put the names into the search engine at that site, and there it was. It wasn't until ages afterward that I found the parents' 1781 marriage at FreeREG, another bit of serendipity.

I must say I loved the thought of freezing all those cup cakes -

Early last year I bought a case of large cup cakes at Makros in Norfolk - -to take when when visiting my son for my last couple of days - mixed choc - lemon - rasp and strawberry - all wrapped individually

When we had them - they were without doubt the best ever cup cakes I have ever tasted - the topping bit - was incredible - for a week after returning here - I was craving them - really craving

If I can get back Xmas - I am bringing two large boxes home with me -

Renes
