Janey

hasten to say that we haven't eaten at McD's for about 20 years!

and Walmart has only just recently made it into Vancouver ............ it's over on the east side somewhere

I've been into a Walmart once, with a friend, didn't buy anything, and didn't like it

Vancouver City Council held out for years about rezoning to let them come in because of the harm to local small businesses ........... but then W found some large premises in east Vancouver, already zoned for "big box" ................ and council couldn't do anything to stop them!

I don't think Harvey's is over here, may be wrong .............. but I shall look out for them, especially if you can pick your own additions. This dairy intolerance is the pits sometimes.

Even some mayonnaises can have dairy in ...... even though it isn't supposed to be an ingredient.

Last time I was in the US we bought beer from Wallmart and got asked for ID

However.....I could buy a gun at the same store!

Sylvia -- try Harvey's if you're looking for a fast-food burger. They really are quite okay, and you do get to stand there and pick what you want on them (lettuce, tomato, onion, dill pickle, mayonnaise). And the chips and onion rings aren't bad for fast food.

I don't speak to people who eat at McDonalds, btw.

Of all the things one can do to avoid supporting US cultural/economic imperialism and the exploitation of workers, not shopping at WalMart and not eating at McDonalds are two of the really easy ones.

McDonalds put my dad out of business 35 years ago, and WalMart has put any number of local businesses out of business. Not that others don't too, but they are the pioneers and supreme practitioners of the art.

Hi

Janey

I've never eaten at Harvey's or Arby's .... think I'm glad I haven't from what you say!

I don't actually like any bought hamburgers, from any place. We once tried Wendy's when they first opened in Vancouver, must be something like 30 years ago.

............... tasteless square burger, tasted like cardboard!

we used to go to Macdonald's for Sunday lunch, often taking one of J's friends with us. Everyone else would have hamburgers ..... I'd have the fish burger.

I make a really mean succulent burger, lovely and juicy and tasty!

Ginny,

To broaden your horizons take a look at this article. Most amusing especially when you see who had the casting vote to decide the case. The follow up comments may also amuse you.

Harvey's makes a hamburger
a bee-yoo-tiful thing.

I tend to agree. Sylvia? Unfortunately they switched from nice broken browned premise-made chips to frozen crap things a few years ago.

Sylvia, do you have Arby's-s, and have you ever eaten there? "Roast beef" sandwiches. The most appalling pressed-bits stuff sliced thin you've ever had.

Remember chicken roll? I was once starving in downtown Toronto, maybe 20 years ago. I decided to hit Fran's, a long-standing local tradition diner-type place, and have what I had when my mum took us out for lunch: a hot chicken sandwich, gravy on everything. It finally came. The "chicken" was slices of chicken roll. I returned it to the kitchen. Starving though I was, they were not going to palm that off on me and make me pay for it.

Wimpy and chips was 2s 6d so was a knickerbocker glory

I was very young I only remember it because my mum sent me into town to buy a cheesgrater for 14s but........I stole it and that is what I spent the money on, plus myself and friend went to the pictures.

Mum still has the cheesegrater and I recently told her what I did 40 years ago lol
