Has Diwali overtaken Bonfire Night as Britain's biggest fireworks event?

I am sure that we are all used to lots of fireworks being let off near our homes in the days leading up to and including November the 5th. This year was no different where I live but last night the quantity (And Quality) of the fireworks exploding near my home almost made Bonfire Night look like a non event. Fireworks began lighting up the sky just after dusk and continued doing so until about midnight.

From my bedroom window I can see right across the Sandwell Valley and beyond to places such as Smethwick and Rowley Regis, some 8/10 miles distant. At about 11:00pm last night the skyline all around was full of colourful explosions bursting in the air. These displays were obviously not the product of cheap fireworks but more likely of fireworks costing many pounds each, in fact there must have been a small fortune spent by Hindu's celebrating their festival.

I have no objection to such displays and as it is a five day festival I expect more of the same on the next few nights. It is interesting however to note how a traditional British event appears to be being overtaken in popularity by an Indian one.

Hi LK,

Sorry to hear about your OH's unfortunate incident involving the cyclist. It reminded me of a similar incident from my youth.

My parents and I were returning from holiday in Great Yarmouth in my fathers 1953 Ford Prefect, the model with a sloping rear end. Whilst driving round Cambridge the rain began falling so heavily that the cars windscreen wipers (Vacuum operated) could not cope so my father decided to pull over until the deluge abated. As we sat there stationary there was an almighty bang at the back of the car. My father and I jumped out to see what had hit us. We were rather surprised to find a cyclist spread eagled on the rear of the car. Apparently he had been riding through the rain with his head down and had not noticed a parked car in his path.

Happily other than suffering a dented pride the cyclist was uninjured and my father (Always a sweet talker) invited him into the car to shelter until the rain stopped. When the rain ceased all parties shook hands and went on their way.

Good morning all and thank you for breakfast Sylvs......... :-D

Night Gins ~~~~~~ that was an early night for you!

Your poor OH LK :-( Did the cycle have lights on it?

I know we motorists are supposed to be considerate towards cyclists but, to be perfectly honest, they scare the life out of me.

Some are fine, wear the right gear and behave well, whilst others wear black, weave all over the road (and pavement) and totally disregard traffic lights etc. :-|

I do hope he's okay. (((hugs))) to you both <3

Your s-i-l sounds very upbeat and positive Sylvs and I do hope her progress is maintained. <3

Am meeting a friend for coffee after lunch and then out for an hour or so tonight but will pop in as and when I can.

Take care all :-D :-D :-D :-D

I had literally just walked in the door this afternoon (Tuesday) when the phone rang .................. sis-i-l

She got home late on Monday afternoon, after a snowy drive from the hospital town to her home town. She said her daughter drove very well .................... but it was very slushy, so a little hairy driving.

She still has the staples in ................. her GP's locum is to remove them on Wednesday morning. Her GP has actually left town for a 2 month holiday in another country.

She has not yet got the results ................. it often takes 10-14 days. But she is feeling well, and eating well although in small amounts. People are bringing her lots of ready-cooked food ........................ small towns are like that!!

OH picked me up from work today. When I let him in the door he was shaking.

Apparently he was getting out of the car, opened the door and a cyclist rode into it.

He did look with his mirror but it was dark and he must have been in the blind spot.

The cyclist and the bike were fine but our car is not. The door is displaced and bent.

SIL drove up to pick us both up as I did not want him to drive in that state.

Sorry LK I missed wishing your mum a happy birthday. Hope she enjoyed her day.

We had the family round for a very informal meal - total chaos ensued! It was wonderful..... <3

Coming home in the car from school, my grandson mentioned that "I'm a celebrity" was on later.

He then began to list the various 'celebrities' who were taking part, asking if I knew them.

I was shaking my head at all of the names he had mentioned until he suddenly said 'Judi Dench'? My head shot round on a swivel and I gasped "She isn't in it surely?"

"No" he replies nonchalantly and carried on chewing!
