Interesting talking about private education, and university.

I went to a State school. Mum wanted me to leave at 16, after O levels, and become a Bank Teller.

I wanted to stay on ........ and got my way after threatening to join the WRAF (Women's Royal Air Force, fo those that don't know the acronym)

Got into uni ................ and Dad's income was so low that I got a Full Grant from the local Education Authority. It covered all my tuition, all my living expenses, and some of my books. The less I paid for rent, the more I had to spend on food, or even clothes and entertainment.

I worked Christmas Post and in the summer vac ...... and that really was my "spending money".

I used to earn about £3 a week working in hotels in the summer, and would have about half the total left after supporting myself during the summer to buy new clothes for the next year, books, etc.

I lived in Residence for the first couple of years at uni, and would take 5/- or 10/- a week out of the bank to pay for my lunches, books, bus fares, hair cuts, and going out on a Saturday. Having shoes heeled or soled was hard ............... I would have to save up for 3 or 4 weeks to afford that.

Living in flats after that lowered the rent ......... but we had to buy all our own food, of course!

OH went to a private school ............... for the very simple reason that he suffered from childhood asthma, and the doctor told his parents that he HAD to be by the sea. Fortunately, the fact that his grandfather was a Methodist minister before he died meant the OH was eligible to attend a very good Methodist boarding school ............. where the costs were much lower than at other private schools.

Similar to myself ............ he asoo got a Full Grant from his Education Authority because of his father's income and commitments.

The Grants in those days were all income based ..................... so it shows that both our parents either had low salary, or commitments (such as other children) that reduced their income below a certain level.

We sent our daughter to a private school here for all 12 years of her schooling ........... for the very simple reason that public education was not that good at that time in our local school, and we could not cross school boundaries (ie collection area) to send her to another school in the city.

You can do that now ............. and parents pick and choose the school that best suits their child.

We also sacrificed to send our son to University and he went just as the fees for attending hit. Our youngest son also went to University (oldest wasnt interested just wanted to get out and start earning)

They were the first from either side of the family to attend University.

But thats what we do as parernts isnt it?

I remembeer my Dad arguing with my maternal gran when I wanted to stay on at school. She thought it was a waste of time a girl staying on as she would just get married and have a family and stop work. My Dad said no if I had a good education I was set for life and if I wanted to stay at school I would end of discussion.

Long after I had my family I went back to college and did a HNC in counselling and me old Dad was so chuffed to attend my graduation ceremony.

Cynthia

Cynthia Report 20 Oct 2012 11:57

I don't have a problem with private education to be honest Gins.

If people can afford it, and they want to do what they think is best for their children, why not?

I couldn't afford it for my children, but I was not so selfish as to begrudge those who could. Neither do I begrudge those who have more money than we do......a little extra would be nice but we are grateful for what we have. There are far more important things in life than money.

It isn't always a 'class divide' issue either. My friend's family weren't a 'posh' family really - as in coming from landed gentry - her father was just a very clever engineer who survived the holocaust and worked hard for a living. I guess he wanted his daughter to have the benefits which had been denied to him.

Gee

Gee Report 20 Oct 2012 09:07

Egg butty.........yum, thanks Dea, the egg is running down me chin

No comment........on private education

Cynthia

Cynthia Report 20 Oct 2012 08:21

Good to see you back Sylvs......you DO get about a bit! ;-)

Thank you for breakfast......something with bacon please. Hmmmmm....such choice!

Dea, my dad wasn't on a very high income and my mum, despite the fact that she had MS, struggled out to work in order that I could go to Secretarial College. Looking back, I realise what an effort it must have been for her. Fortunately, she worked for a Doctor so I guess he understood.

I think I only knew of a couple of people who went to uni back then - and they always seemed very clever and a bit posh.

In fact, my oldest friend was one of them. She had the benefit of a private education, went to a Welsh, Uni married an American and has been a Professor of Biology at a Uni in the states for many a long year. We're still good friends despite the distance and the education! :-D

The whole family are brainy - husband is an eye surgeon, their daughter is a midwife and their son is a Professor of History.

Makes me feel like Little Orphan Annie :-( :-D ;-)

Looks as though it could be a nice day here..................see you later ~~~
