I love a coal fire but not the work which went with it. My grandad (the one with the medals), used to keep a roll of newspapers which I think he had stuck together and he would unroll them on the way to making up the fire and use them as a pathway back and forth so that he didn't get sooty prints on the carpet!!


I love the smell of a bonfire and burning wood. Mmmmm.

My uncle had a coal fire and I loved it.....we had central heating so was not used to a real fire

I have a real a pretend coal fire here too.......but i have central heating too :-D

so frustrated with GR that I'm seriously thinking of giving up on the site


and will probably base myself on familytreeforum ....... which was started by GR'ers back in 2007, and is full of familiar faces.

All went well with my visitors even though the second batch were an hour later than they thought they would arrive. Not to worry, got my Christmas Round Robin almost finished.

Was just discussing 'the olden days' with my hubby !! - before central heating !!!

It is ';buddy cold here' but I reminded him that 'in the olden days we lived in tiny little houses with a coal fire which used to heat the whole house !!!

It seems its free to search extracts and then you have to pay for the full story
