Elaine Report 18 Oct 2011 21:07

thnx erin...least there no murderers! lol

My sister in law told me that Jackie Aughney was blind(this was either a cousin or uncle...it wasnt their gt g/father John Aughney, who was also blind)

My husband has retinitis pigmentosa, which,if not diagnosed early enough, could cause blindness.

the tree shows that blindness runs in the family.

its interesting that Patrick Curran leased land from Robert Doyle,cos in the 1911 census,Patrick Curran(36)lived with Mary Curran,Mother(75).,Kate Doyle,1st cousin(34).,Catherine Doyle,Aunt(73).,and three 2nd cousins,John(6).,Sarah(5)and Patrick(1)Doyle.

could the mother, Mary,be the widow of the Patrick who leased the land and also the sister(or daughter)of Robert Doyle who owned the land?

they lived 80,Kilcarrig St.,Bagenalstown.

Also in Bagenalstown(at 6,Market Sq)lived Michael Curran(45)a barber from Dublin City.,wife Statia(36).,son Thomas(3) and Henry Doyle(39)Brother-in-law.

only put this in cos of the Curran-Doyle connection...don't know if any ancestors came from Dublin.

There also an Aughney-Doyle connection>Michael Aughneys' daughter,Annie(Nan) m.Jim Doyle.!

As for, could 2 brothers have married 2 sisters,Betty...Leos' 2 brothers married 2 sisters, and his 1st cousin married their other sister!
So they do seem to keep it in the family!

found out John Aughney d.1907,aged 90.
His wife Alicia d.1901,aged 80
Michael Aughney d.1941,aged 82
So,obviously,my husband is from a family of long-livers..both Currans and Aughneys!

Look forward to hearing from you Betty...hope your internet soon up and running smoothly again.

Elaine....(Obviously not John 1901) but interesting neverthe less....

Nationalist 1956.
Thanks.
Will you kindly allow me space to offer my sincere thanks to all my friends
in the district who in consideration
of my blindness so kindly subscribed to the purchase of a radio set for me.
Especially Mrs Lillis, Lunclone and Mrs Bradley, Janeville, who so kindly
collected for the purpose.
I am more than grateful, John Aughney, Newtown, Bagenalstown.

???Eliza Lakes m MICHAEL Curran, not Charles....Charles Curran and Mary LAKES were witnesses.

I don't know how you all here on GR manage to trace so many families, with so many different names!!

I have done my maternal and paternal sides..Leos' maternal and paternal and Pat Cookes maternal and paternal(with a lot of help..much appreciated)and I sometimes think i have brain freeze.!

I find a christian name i recognize, then when i look at my many notes,i find its the right christian name, wrong surname!! lol

I sincerely applaud each and every one of you.

Thankyou.

chrissiex Report 17 Oct 2011 13:41

so there was just that one little trace of Leix left, Mary Leix the witness to the marriage of Charles Curran and Elizabeth Lakes

I wonder are there any of the Lakes family around now who have the name i.e. male line descendants ... maybe they would like to change back to the real spelling and pronunciation :-)

... ah there are a couple of people here with Lakes from Bagnalestown and Shanakill Crossing in their trees, probably descended from that Thomas Leix

Elaine

Elaine Report 17 Oct 2011 13:10

chrissiex...re the Currans..you said it would be interesting to know if it said Leix or Lakes as father on Charles Currans' birth cert.

I now have copies of birth certs of Charles(b.Leighlinbridge)John.,Frances.,Catherine and mary(all b.Fnagh & Myshal)

Mother down as Elizabeth Curran(formerly Lakes)on certs of Frances.,Catherine and John.

Mother down as Eliza Curran(formerly Lakes)on Charles' cert.

Mother down as Lizzie Curran(formerly Lakes)on Marys' cert

Elaine Report 17 Oct 2011 03:08

my hubands' g/father Michael Aughney,b.c1859..(.married to Catherine,b.c1858) was the son of John and Alicia Aughney.

John and Alicia were living with Michael and his wife and 5 of their children in Newtown on 1901 census....on 1911 census,no mention of John & Alicia.

chrissiex

chrissiex Report 17 Oct 2011 02:39

it is possible ... Alicia could have been a second wife

the submitted records came from old familysearch, looked for John Aughney births and marriages in Carlow

the others from new familysearch ... I just looked for a John Aughney death in Carlow and picked the best match :-)

also looked there for births and marriages but no luck

at both places looked for children with parents John Aughney and mother Alicia but no luck there either ... hm if she was a second wife ... no luck with father John mother Elizabeth either though

you know the name of the child of John you are tracing back from I imagine ?

time for bed soon, will look back tomorrow

Elaine

Elaine Report 17 Oct 2011 01:09

thnx chrissiex...you could be right about the birth date being 1817...I had "about"1818.....I have Alicia in 1901 census,as being 78,making her born c.1823.

John is down as aged 83,thats why i thought he was b.1818.

Is there any way of finding Alicias' maiden name and Johns' father..going back another generation?

I would imagine i would need Johns' birth cert, but its catch 22..need the birth cert to get the details, but need to find where he was born to get ref no. to order the cert!(if you can understand that)

Leos' family DID come from bagenelstown,or v.close.

was speaking to my s-in-l on Friday, and we now know the names of 27!!! of Leos' first cousins(and he only knew one,as he left Kildare, where his parents moved to from carlow, when he was 6)

I know it doesnt help us to trace back, but its still lovely, cos most of em are still alive, including one in her 90s!

BTW,how did you find these details on family search?
I tried the old one and the new one,but couldn't find anything.

once again,thnx.

how about a death ? :-) from familysearch

name: John Aughney
registration district: Carlow
event type: DEATHS
registration quarter and year: Oct - Dec 1907
estimated birth year: 1817
age (at death): 90
volume number: 3
page number: 251
digital folder number: 4201707

that is the closest anyway

if it is him and the age is accurate then he was born 1817 after the census date and before the date of death

name: Alicia Aughney ?
registration district: Carlow
event type: DEATHS
registration quarter and year: Apr - Jun 1901
estimated birth year: 1821
age (at death): 80
volume number: 3
page number: 296
digital folder number: 4201705

someone has submitted this to the Mormons

... but no this is also submitted

In the census,he was living house 2,Newtown(Agha,Carlow)

Have looked on here and on Ancestry, but can't find him.

Elaine Report 12 Oct 2011 23:22

thnx again Chrissiex...i googled baptisms Dunlecky.Bagnelstown.....come up with loads of Currans!

looking from around the 1820s,i found:-
Margaret Curran.1821...father Patt Curran>mother Mgt B?..Bagenelstown.

Patrick Curran.1826...father Patc Curran>mother Mary Carrol..Boherduff

Bridget Curran.1829..father Patc Curran>mother Mary Carrol..Boherduff

Patt Curran.1831..father Patt Curran>mother Biddy..Boherduff.[.Illegitimate]

James Curran.1821..father Pat Curran>mother Mary Barron(Carrol?)..Boherduff

Johanna Curran.1841..father Chas Curran>mother Fanny Carrol..Boherduff

Mary Curran.1845..father John Curran>mother Ann Doyle..Boherduff.

Ann Curran.1845..father Michael Curran>mother Catharine Lynch..Boherduff

several of these children had a Patrick Curran as the father, but i couldn't see either Anastasia Walsh or Nancy or Ann Walsh as any of the mothers.

I did find an Anastasia, but she was Murray....she was married to John Curran, and they had 3 children(at least)..Andrew.1840.,Patrick.1843 and William.1845...they lived Corries.

As you said,Charles was Michaels' son,b.1891.

Joe will be 90 next year, and his hearing isn't quite as sharp as it was,so i wondering if he confused his maternal and paternal gt g/fathers(but i can't find who Charles married to find out his fathers' name on the wedding cert)

I am in touch with a Peter Curran, also tracing the family...he sent me pics of curran graves.

He asked would Joe Curran be willing to talk to him,nxt time he's in Carlow....while i was on the ph,i again asked Joe what Michaels' father was called and he said John!

Am going to ring my s-in-law tomorrow...she is in her 80s and what she doesn't know isn't worth knowing! She has a memory like an elephant!

Will run the names you have given me,plus what Pete gave me and what I have found, past her.....hopefully,something might ring a bell!

will post if i find out anything new.

'witnesses down as Charles Curran and Mary Leix.'

... and Eliza Moran ...

yes ... the missing link ! not that I thought it was 'missing' :-D

'When I spoke to Michael Currans' g/son,Joe Curran(my husbands' first cousin)a few weeks ago,he told me his father was Charles, his g/father Michael and his gt g/father Patrick.'

so this means

Joe Curran
is son of Charles ( c 1900 )
who was son of
Michael Curran ( c1849 ) who married Eliza Lakes
who was son of Patrick ( ? )

?

but the marriage certificate says Michael c1849 was son of Charles not Patrick ...

the 1901 shows Charles as son of Michael just to confirm

Curran Michael 50 Head of Family ... born Co Carlow
Curran Elizebeth 38 Wife
Curran Charles 10 Son

the only previous-generation Curran in Boherduff is Thomas aged 70
for others in Fennagh 'DED' there is a Hugh aged 65 in Lumcloon

this is no help to you :-) ... except that collecting names can help to make connections ... ( just look at Mary Leix ! )

there is a submitted record showing a Patt Curran marrying Anastatia Walsh in Leighlinbridge 07 July 1828 ( I finally checked and they are abt 4 miles apart ) ... I wonder whether Joe has skipped a generation and Patt had son Charles who had son Michael ...

mind you somebody else has submitted Patt Curin marrying Nancy or Ann Walsh abt 1819 in Bagenalstown ( 2 mi south of Leighlinbridge) ... and that looks like the same couple ...

Elaine

Elaine Report 12 Oct 2011 20:42

could anyone help me please?

I need to find the birth of Michael Curran,b.1849(we think Co.Carlow, but as the family lived round Myshall,I found that part could come under Wicklow.

I have a copy of the marriage cert of Michael to Eliza Lakes, but it is rather a mess,to put it mildly!

Under fathers name and surname,it says Charles Curran,under that Charles(scribbled out)Eliza Lakes(scribbled out)Eliza Moran(scribbled out)John Lakes.Witnesses were Charles Curran & Mary Lakes.

Am trying to find out if Michaels' father IS Charles,or if whoever wrote it,mixed the name up with the witness?

I have googled baptisms in lots of towns and villages round carlow, but can't find it.

Elaine

Elaine Report 8 Oct 2011 17:10

have looked again,Erin...still looks like Knockthomas to me,although whoever wrote cert out at the time made a right b***s up of it!!

The only way I could tell the place began with K was by matching it with the K in Lakes!Their K is like a H without the crossbar!!..just 2 lines, one with a loop at the top!

Under fathers' name and surname it says as follows:-

Charles Curran
Charles(crossed out)
Eliza Lakes(crossed out)
Eliza Moran(crossed out)
John Lakes.

witnesses down as Charles Curran and Mary Leix.

As you can see from earlier posting,Chrissiex found a family of Leix, which match with a family of Lakes at a later date!(one dau was Mary....the witness above?)

When I spoke to Michael Currans' g/son,Joe Curran(my husbands' first cousin)a few weeks ago,he told me his father was Charles, his g/father Michael and his gt g/father Patrick.

Could whoever wrote out the marriage cert have put a witness down as the father,or am i being fanciful? lol

just spotted on posting above,at 00.09,the Leix family Chrissiex found had parents John and Eliza(nee MORAN....the name Eliza Moran was crossed out on the marriage cert, under fathers' name!)

Elaine....Have another check of the MC for Michael and Eliz....could it not read "Knockmanus"..? That would be more likely given it is the Co Carlow ...Barony of Idrone West ..CP Ballyellin....
