wasnt that i didnt take notice of your mary leix....just that you put children mary.,william and kate...i simply asked if they could be elizas' siblings.

i did actually "find" mary(even tho you found her before me!)...i googled baptisms for several places, then ploughed thro before i found her....i thought i rem the name, but had pressed submit instead of preview, before i realized it was the family you had given me..sorry.

thnx for suggesting eliza worked at knockthomas house...i never even thought of that!!

'Have a copy of the wedding cert of MICHAEL CURRAN,b.c1849 and ELIZA LAKES,b.c1863.They married 9th Oct.1890, in Bagenelstown., Carlow.'

she was very likely employed there herself don't you think if she was 27 years old ?

I still have not the slightest doubt that her parents were

name: Eliza Lakes
registration district: Carlow
event type: DEATHS
registration quarter and year: Oct - Dec 1892
* estimated birth year: 1832
age (at death): 60

name: *John Lakes*
registration district: Carlow
event type: DEATHS
registration quarter and year: Jul - Sep 1905
* estimated birth year: 1825
age (at death): 80

and that they were the John Leix and Eliza Moran parents of the children I listed earlier

the Leix births in Leighlinbridge

Mary Leix 1865
William 1868
Kate Leix 1875

with William appearing in the later census as Lakes

and I think this will be father John in the 1901 census

Residents of a house 15 in Chapel Street (Leighlinbridge, Carlow)
Leaks John 78 Male Head of Family
Agricultural Labourer, cannot read, widower

'I found a Mary Leix(Lakes?) baptised 9th Aug.1865.. Leighlinbridge., Carlow.. father> John Leix., mother>Eliza Moran.
Could this be Eliza Currans' sister? She was born when Eliza was 2 yrs old,and a lot of people named their firsborns after the parents.'

Elaine you 'found' this ??

I put all that Leix info on page 2 and you didn't want to know ! do go back and review ! :-)

Looking for help...CURRAN/LAKES families.

Have a copy of the wedding cert of MICHAEL CURRAN,b.c1849 and ELIZA LAKES,b.c1863.They married 9th Oct.1890,in Bagenelstown.,Carlow.

Father of Michael was CHARLES CURRAN.....father of Eliza was JOHN LAKES...both were labourers.

Under "residence at time of marriage",Michael was living in BOHERDUFF.,Carlow and Eliza was living(I think..not very easy to read)KNOCKTHOMAS.

On googling Knockthomas 1863,I found there was a Knockthomas House,I think, owned by the Tracy family.

If this is the correct Knockthomas(could only find one othe Knockthomas, and that was in Mayo)why would Eliza have this as the place she lived prior to marriage?

Could her father,John, have been a labourer on the estate?Could they have lived in a cottage on the estate?

I would be very grateful for any snippet of information.

PS..on Charles(their eldest son)' birth cert,in 1891,Michael was a labourer.,Leighlinbridge...his wife was ELIZA,formerly Lakes

On Johns' birth cert,in 1892.,Michael was a farmer.,Boherduff..his wife was ELIZABETH,formerly Lakes.

On Frances' birth cert,in 1894.,Michael was a farmer.,Boherduff...his wife was ELIZABETH,formerly Lakes.

On Catherines' birth cert,in 1895.,Michael was a farmer.,Boherduff...his wife was ELIZABETH,formerly Lakes.

On the youngest childs' Marys' birth cert,,in 1899,Michael was again a labourer.,Boherduff...his wife was LIZZIE,formerly Lakes.

So,in the space of 8 yrs,Michael went from a labourer to a farmer and back to a labourer, and his wife went under three christian names..ELIZA.,ELIZABETH AND LIZZIE!!

I found a Mary Leix(Lakes?)baptised 9th Aug.1865..Leighlinbridge.,Carlow..father> John Leix.,mother>Eliza Moran.

Could this be Eliza Currans' sister? She was born when Eliza was 2 yrs old,and a lot of people named their firsborns after the parents.

the faq page I linked to gives a phone number

http://www.hse.ie/eng/services/Find_a_Service/bdm/Certificates_ie/faq/#question12

I have a question about an order, how can I contact the Civil Registration Service?

We would be delighted to help you, please ensure you have the details of your order before you contact us at: 01 8638200 between 9:30am-4:30pm Monday to Friday.

I would try that one anyway

also on that page it talks about dates and it does refer to post 1920 ... best to check it seems

Elaine

Elaine Report 28 Sep 2011 23:16

clicked on your links, chrissiex, but on second page ,where it says date of marriage-check if approx,it won't let you go any further back than 1920....which is a BIG approx from 1890!

also it asks for marriage place or register office.

going to have another look to see if theres a contact ph.no.and then i can explain what info i have and have not.

Elaine

Elaine Report 28 Sep 2011 22:30

thnx again..will try now!

the reason i concentrating more on the Currans is because the name follows through, unlike the wives' sides.

at my age,i try to keep things as straightforward as i can! lol

I guess I'm just different ...

if my father's name was Black and my mother's name was White ... I am just as interested in the Whites ( and all of the women who married my White male ancestors, and their ancestors ) as I am in the Blacks ... after all I am just as much a White ... and just as much all of the families of the women who married Whites ... as I am a Black :-)

I have never understood being interested in only one's father's direct ( surname ) line

who do we see here doing all the family history research ? women ! imagine if three generations from now one of our descendants doing their family history says they're not interested in us ...

anyway Elaine the questions section at the groireland site says

http://www.hse.ie/eng/services/Find_a_Service/bdm/Certificates_ie/faq/#question3

Date of marriage (there is a checkbox which should be selected if the applicant is not sure of the exact date and has chosen an approximate date)

and if you look at the online application form

http://www.hse.ie/lifeevents/

second page, it says

Date of Marriage (dd/mm/yy):
Please check the box if this is an approximate date

( it does not say that on the paper copy to mail in so if that is how you are doing it you could just write 'appoximate' )

all you know is the quarter so you could just pick a date in that quarter

I am predomimantly researching the Currans(that is my married name, after all!)

However it is very interesting finding out about ANY of Leos' family.

Maura said I could get a copy of Michael & Elizabeths' marriage cert from groireland..but when I went on the site,it asked for date of marriage, and parents' names.
As I don't have this info.,how can I get a copy?

chrissiex

chrissiex Report 28 Sep 2011 21:31

I didn't mean 'thanks' Elaine ... I meant that I did a whole lot of research and found all that information about the Leix / Lakes family and you didn't say anything except about the pronunciation .......

I just thought you might say something about the information, the two Leix families who became Lakes, that it is almost certain that your Elizabeth is the daughter of one of the Leix couples probably John and Eliza ...

maybe it's just the Currans you're interested in I don't know

but if you get the Curran Lakes marriage certificate I will be interested to know who Eliza's father is !

Elaine

Elaine Report 28 Sep 2011 20:05

i apologise re the pronouncing of Leix...I was only explaining what i knew.

Elaine

Elaine Report 28 Sep 2011 20:02

thnx donna....think i put a message on rootschat...will have to check again to see if i got any replies.

Elaine ... I posted all that information showing that the LEIX family was very obviously the LAKES family ... and that was all you had to say ?

Eringobragh1916 ... I really did research and explain the connection of the Leix and Lakes families ... two Leix couples who became Lakes ... in the censuses and bmd records ... and the marriage has been found ... did you not read page 2 at all ? :-)

Oh well, no point in spending all that time researching and preparing messages if that's all they mean .........

just for your info before I go

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/County_Laois

"The county's name was formerly spelt as Laoighis and Leix."

http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~irllao/

"Welcome to the County Leix/Laois home page of the Ireland Genealogical Projects."

I did all that research before I posted all this information in the thread ......
