Just realized that the 1940 census listing is given above. Roland is actually Ronald and Raymond is Rae, daughter rather than son. At the time of their emigration in 1928 (Esther and the 4 youngest kids), their address was 84 Ogilvie St, Belfast. George had emigrated in 1926, while Ronald and Violet had come over separately earlier in 1928.

George's sponsor when he came over was his brother-in-law Stuart Rea. Since his wife was an Elliott, there is a good chance that Stuart was married to a McCleary daughter.

Hi Sharon
Just seen your post.
I have the death certificate and newspaper cuttings for Nannie Usher. She dies 6 days after being burnt at home. She was on her own knitting when, they think a gas light exploded and her dress caught alight. She died as a result.

The mother of Nannie McCleery (M'Cleary) is Frances Alicia Hamilton and her father is William Usher of Dubliln. Nannie and John were married in Dublin at St. George's Church of Ireland. I do have wedding infomation but will have to look it up. My Usher Cousin in Dublin just informed me of this thread. Frances Alicia Hamilton first married Peter Quin in November 1827 in Dublin, they lived in Banbridge and had 2 children John Quinn and Peter my great grandfather. Peter Quin died in Banbridge December 1829 and Frances secondly married her cousin William Usher of Dublin, Lower Ormond Quay. Frances father was Lt. Robert Hamilton of Scarva and her mother Frances Usher, otherwise Usher of Eyrecourt, co. Galway. Frances Alicia died at Francis Street, Dundalk.
Nannie's brother Benjamin Hamilton Usher lived with my great grandfather Peter Quinn at 32 Belmont Road in West Derby Rural, a suburb of Liverpool. He shows on census as being step son but in fact step brother. Benjamin Hamilton usher died in Sydney, Australia leaving one daughter and wife. Nannie has several brothers and sisters. I will add to this when I get the chance.

Hi Barry,

I've seen the record for John and Nannie's marriage. I had seen earlier postings (different boards) indicating that Peter Quinn was Nannie's stepbrother but I wasn't aware of any other children. Would love to get more details. As I"m sure you know, it's rather challenging doing research from this side of the pond.

I'm not a direct descendent of the family, but I'm doing it for a good friend Rae McCleery, who is George Smallman McCleery's daughter (and therefore Nannie's granddaughter).

I will try to follow up shortly. Nannie would have been an Aunt to my grandfather. Nannie's step brother Peter Quinn moved to England and Nannie's brother was living with my great grandfather in Liverpool as I mentioned. I will try to find some things and get them to you. Where is Rae located?

Hi Barry
Have you any photos of the Mccleery clan? I have a photo of Nanny and John Mccleery with siblings but need it confirmed. I know one of the women is Margaret Kirk as she is my paternal grandmother. I can send the photo if you would like.

Hello Jackie: I do not have any photos of the clan of Mccleery. There are precious few of the the Quinn Clan. I would love to have a photo of Nanny and John. As I mentioned earlier Nanny is the daughter of my great grandmother Frances Hamilton who married first Peter Quin and then William Usher. I know that Frances was living with John and Nanny upon her death and much of the family lands were left to the Mccleery family in County Down and Armagh. I do have a cousin who is doing some research of Frances (Hamilton) Usher last will at PRONI as I want to know more about the whereabouts of the properties of Robert Hamilton. I believe the Hugh Mccleery lived on family lands in Dromore, Co. Down.
My email address is [email protected] I have put the address is capitals so that you know the first letter is an L and not a 1, otherwise [email protected]
I live at
