Thank you to those who helped me before. I have another problem now, I cannot find my Bourner family on the 1861 and 1871 censuses.

I have Charles Bourner born 1834 Ashburnham Battle sussex on the 1841 and 1851 censuses with wife Sophia. I have him as a widower on the 1881 census with 3 of his children Mary A Bourner. William Bourner. and Walter Bourner whose line I an tracing.

I have a marriage record for a daughter Sophia L Bourner in oct-Dec 1866 registered in Battle so still living in that area. She is on the 1851 census along with other siblings. I have tried all names but nothing comes up for them on 1861 and 1871 censuses any ideas?

Astra and lesley thanks a bundle for sorting that out for me I was still looking for the father Charles b 1806 and Mother Sophia born 1810 Doh!!
not the Charles who is 7 on 1841 census.

1841
Charles 35
Sophia 30
Eliza 13
Charles 7
Mary 4
James 2
Sophia 8 months

Elizabeth mother 75
William 50 listed as brother on the 1851 census.

1881
Charles widower 47 born 1834 he is the son aged 7 on the 1841 census.

you are right I have been looking for his father and mother on 1861 / 71
censuses ( Charles and Sophia) so his wife's name as you say is Sarah keep forgetting how often sons have same name as father generation to generation.

thanks again Pat

I still cannot locate them on the 1861 and 1871 censuses even with the info you gave me. The confusion over Sophia is because Charles obviously married again and I was working back from 1911 census here the family

I've checked using his wife's name and details and nothing coming up except more as the above. Usually if you find the family on the 1881 census a box at the side will come up with the same name and details for other censuses but the only other one is for 1891

This is sooooooo!! frustrating

Thanks allotment

That's great I have them now. The hand written name on the actual census
clearly reads Bourner especially on 1861 :-)

Please I hope you are still interested in Charles and Sophia.
Sophia was born in Battle daughter of Stephen Bourner and Charles was the son of James Bourner. The pair were cousins.
The Charles and Sarah people are confusing you with are Charles Lewes Bourner and his wife (this Charles was the son of Ann Bourner daughter of James Bourner and her husband, Stephen Bourner junior. Again a cousin marriage.)
I have tried to find Charles and Sophia in the 1861 census as well especially as Sophia was buried at Penhurst later in the 1860s. Personally I believe Ancestry does not have Penhurst, Sussex on their 1861 census coverage.
Please contact me if you would like the burial records or anything else I can offer on Charles and Sophia.
Charles was the brother of my own ancestor Thomas Bourner 1798. Their father was James Bourner as was their grandfather.

I'm sorry about those links but it's the only way to do it - you would have to paste the link back together to go there, I had to break them up so as not to break the thread

that page is the description in 1861 of district 12 in Battle which is Penhurst but there are no other pages, only the district description

'The Whole of the Parish of Penurst ...'
