I had only looked at the newsletter this morning as far as the challenge :-)

Ancestry's testing is genetic astrology, and a complete waste of money.

FTDNA has been trying to expand into traditional genealogy kinds of things ... a while back it was surveying members about what family tree software they use ...
and I suspect the companies that provide traditional genealogy info on line are eager to get into the DNA aspect of it
Just last week, FTDNA also sent out this:
'Since 2012 Family Tree DNA has teamed up with MyHeritage to integrate our DNA tests to their international customer base of 80 millions users. This represents an additional step by Family Tree DNA in expanding into new markets for the benefit of our more than 8,100 Surname and Geographic Projects.
Family Tree DNA is again partnering with MyHeritage to offer a limited-time price reduction on MyHeritage's specialized historical records collection, SuperSearch. ...'
so I guess there are more traditional genealogy companies to go around than there are genetic genealogy companies, and the traditional ones can't demand exclusive partnerships :-)
apparently nobody wants anything to do with Ancestry.com, which now is only offering the useless tests about your 'ancestry' -- that there was a thread here about a few days ago

... and by the way, Debbie Kennett (who is the project administrator for the Devon project at FTDNA) has had something to say (as have many other actual scientists) about the Ancestry.com kinds of tests, which she calls 'genetic astrology' :-D

those articles point out the difference between
- tests like Ancestry's, which tell you 'you are a Viking'
- the ones that you and I have done and like the one done for Richard III, which are real science
(and are useful for genealogy only if you can prove or disprove a likely match with someone else who has tested)
I expect that the partnership between FMP and FTDNA will involve things like
- mutual discounts
- the ability to link the ancestors in your FTDNA accounts to records or family trees (do they have them?) at FMP, maybe

As a member of FMP, and currently awaiting DNA results from Family Tree DNA, I will wait with anticipation to see what evolves from this partnership
