Ancestry Help needed with French translation.

Having transcribed many French acts , I would comment on "lecture faite".

In the French archives, records of marriage and burial commonly end with "signé apres la lecture" (or similar). Which translates as 'signed after (the) reading'. So I think the Canadian "lecture faite" is equivalent to "apres la lecture".
Which could mean that they read the register and signed that it was a true record of the event.

I had a doctor's appt yesreday. My doctor was a francophone quebecois - he's completely bilingual now, but has no genealogical experience (nor interest).

His guess was that "Lecture faite" just meant "The record is done".

All I need to do now is print off what research has been done by brilliant helpful individuals and then decide which is the right Napoleon. Once again thank-you to everyone here as without your help these records would have remained a "mystery" to me. :-)

Argyllgran - a better translation than mine

I had (something something) as We, the undersigned vicar, having....
[They usually say Priest vicar - I suppose vicar is the most equivalent C of E rank]

I read "(something) made" as "lecture faite", and translate this as "proclaim the marriage".

Most of the marriages follow this form, even down to the reading of just one bann.

The only disagreement I have is your translation of "dit St Jean" as "known as St Jean"
It can mean that, but it can mean so much more that I would leave that bit of the name as "dit St Jean".

Detective sent me the burial service image (Thanks for that!!):

The 12th May 1936, we, the undersigned Priest
buried in the parish cemetery the body of Napoleon Merineau,
Husband of Sophronie Girard
[ There's a preprinted line here with just 2 words, neither of which I can make out, followed by "neuf" - maybe a new grave?]
of the current month - Age 67 - of the parish of Saint Enfant Jesus.
Witnesses Louis Philippe Gregoir & Joseph Darvini Merineau
who have signed. "Lecture faite"
L P Gregoir
J D Merineau

Oscar Polland Priest.

There's that "Lecture faite" again - I really don't quite know what to make of it.

Sophrenie was probably Girard for the burial service.
This was common in Quebec, even more than Scotland.

In Scotland, she probably would have been buried as Paterson.

ArgyllGran Report 27 Feb 2015 21:57

The marriage (more or less!):

On 24th January 1893, after the publication of a bann of marriage made at our parish Mass, dispensation of the two other banns having been granted by the Ordinary of the Archdiocese, between Napoleon Merineau, butcher, resident in this parish, son, of legal age, of Amedee Merineau, butcher, and Nathalie Patiedal, known as St Jean, of this same parish, on the one hand; and Sophranie Cecilia Girard, resident in this parish, minor daughter of Edouard Pierre Girard, hotelier, and Elizabeth Belanger, of this same parish, on the other hand; no impediment or opposition having been stated, and with the consent of the parents of the minor party, (something something) having received their mutual consent to the marriage, and having given the nuptial blessing in the presence of Amedee Merineau, father of the groom, of Pierre Edouard Girard, father of the bride, all signed, with the spouses, (something) made.

The marr is of Napoleon s/o Amedee Merineau, butcher, and
Nathalie Pateidal dit St Jean.

A first stab at translation

The 1st November 1868
the undersigned, Vicar of the parish [ca??ue]
of St Vincent de Paul, we baptized Napoleon born
the 30th of the previous month of the legitimate marriage of Joseph
Morneau and Angelique Quevillon of this parish.
Godfather: Francois Lauzon, who signed with us
Godmother: Arisaleice? Quevillon, who [? ? ?]
to sign [? ?] in our presence and marked [with a] cross.
Francois Lauzon
X Arisaleice? Quevillon
C P Beaulieu P? V? [P? V? = vicar of parish?]

I haven't translated the marr yet, and I have to go out soon for the rest of the day i.e., until 3am UK time.

Guessing it's the marriage guy that's of interest.

Mgnv, we assumed that they were both for the same person.

Rollo had posted on this thread yesterday: he said he was going to look at the images and translate them. He may have sent it directly to the OP.
If your French is good enough to do the same, could you post a translation/transcription here please?

Here's the images for the baptism & marriage you mention
B http://tinyurl.com/qz7995c
M http://tinyurl.com/qzf7t2l
They don't relate to the same person - which one is yours?
The one getting baptized or the one getting married?

+++DetEcTive+++ Report 26 Feb 2015 11:11

Not that good, so it *really* does need to be checked. You might consider downloading the images, then forwarding them to any member who is fluent in French but not an Ancestry subscriber. I’ll PM one in case he is around and able to volunteer.

Basic details of Baptism
Baptism date – 1st Nov 1868
Born 30 Jan
Legitimate son of S_nph Merineau and Angelique Priai_t(h,l)ou
Signed Francois Lauzan, Araluina (P,D)ergeilleay

Marriage
24 January 1893
Napolean might have been a Butcher.
His brides name looks to be Sophinaie Cecilia Garard.
Other names mention
Nathalie Cateidal,
Edward Pierre Gerard, hotelier
Elizabeth Belangee
Armand Merineau – grooms father who might also be a butcher
Piere Eduard Garard – Brides father

Burial
2 May 1938
Spouse of Sophronie Girard
Other names
Francis (might be Louis!) Philippe Girard
Joseph _arvine Merineau

You can see that although many of the names are repeated, the handwriting is making it difficult to decide on the correct spelling.

I have managed to locate relatives on Ancestry who lived in Quebec Canada. If anyone here who has Ancestry would be willing to translate the documents I would be very grateful.

The name is Napoleon Merineau. His baptism is in 1868 in Montréal St-Vincent-de-Paul. His marriage is in 1893 Montréal St-Jean-Baptiste and burial in 1936 Montréal Basilique Notre-Dame

Many Thanks
Alan
