How to find out

Patricia Report 11 May 2015 20:36

My great grandfather James Tuohey 1861-1915 was married to Frances Fry 1856-1900. Her parents were Thomas Fry and his wife was also Frances. How do I find her Maiden name?
Also James Tuohey's father John Tuohey was born in Ireland in 1829. How can I discover where in Ireland? He seems to have come from Ireland to Dover before 1857 and were living in Tynemouth by 1869

Kay????

Kay???? Report 11 May 2015 20:56

From the 1861 census of the Fry family Mary is showing the eldest child bn 1847,

a marriage in 1846 of Thomas Fry to Frances *Thompson* took place in South Shields looks a possible.

Findmypast have some Irish records,,you can take out a months sub to view them,,,,,,,,there is a John Tuohey bn 1829 listed in workhouse records but its a popular name so unless you have any other information to back details up then its not 100% surety its your relative.

If John was born in 1829, there are these possibilities from RootsIreland:

Church Baptism Toohey John 1829 Co. Tipperary
Church Baptism Touhy John 1829 Co. Limerick
Church Baptism Tuohy John 1829 Co. Tipperary

There were 40 John Tuohey's (or variant spelling) born 1829 +/- 5 years, in various places in Ireland.

If you subscribe to the website, you can view the details. (Not much help, though, as you still won't know which one is the right person - though as Beverley suggests, his marriage cert would give his father's name.) Shortest sub is £18 for 1 month.

John was in 'The Preventative Service'. His father James, was a labourer. Thomas Finch Kite and Emily Kite were witnesses.

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 11 May 2015 21:49

The Preventive Service was a sort of early coastguard/customs & excise service.

A long shot - would the Preventive Service have had anything to do with the army? Or maybe he joined them when he left the army??

Here's a search in the local index at:
http://www.southtyneside.gov.uk/article/9966/Register-Search

Frances THOMPSON married Thomas HOY on 11 Mar 1846
Register: GRO Entry: 403

S Tyne provide a Register key:
http://www.southtyneside.gov.uk/article/10778/Marriage-indexes
GRO is not on the list, but it's my guess it's the registrar's own register which would contain rego office marrs, and non-conformist marrs.
Pre-1899, only C of E, jews, quakers (& the registrars) were authorized to keep official marr rego's, so a registrar would have to attend any non-conformist marr with his official marr rego for the couple to sign to complete the marr ceremony.

It also looks like there's some transcription issues with the groom's surname.
