Sorry been watching celebrity jungle.
I have looked and done all sorts of ways but cant find her either. Oh well at least it isn't just me then who can't find her.
It is her niece (my OH auntie) that told me she married a Charles Duke. I know mistakes can happen but all the other information on the tree is correct. So might have to put that marriage cert on my wanted list.

At least now I can use the wild cards properly for other searches.
Many thanks
Anne

This is the marriage registration for a Winifred Davis and Charles Duke ................. but there is no way to tell whether this is your Winifred or not unless you buy the certificate

Marriages Dec 1916 (>99%)
Davis Winifred Duke Stockbridge 2c 237
Duke Charles H Davis Stockbridge 2c 237

I have to say, I tried all those, plus searching only on surname and only on forename, and also only on initials (in case she was in hospital) .... and she isn't anywhere????

I tried mainly on ancestry, because the two sites do have different transcriptions and it is possible to sometimes find a person on one site, and then work out why you can't find it on the other

Ann

The wild card I use is the *, and you need a minimum of 3 letters before or after it

Try ................

Win* ...... that finds all the possible shortenings, extra letters etc

Dav*s ............ that will find Davis and Davies

Use only the COUNTY of birth ............. Wiltshire. People didn't always use the town or village, or used a different one!

Use year of birth +/- 2 years

Hello all,
I now have FMP but I would like some help in what to put in the search boxes. I have no idea and tried to do the wild cards or whatever they called.

I am looking for Winifred Davis born 1897 in chirton wiltshire. She is not at home with her parents David Davis and Mary. other siblings at home were Lilly 1893 and Fred 1899. She is not living with any of her older married siblings either. I have passed down to me that she married a Charles duke in stockbridge in 1916.

I have tried Winiefred, winniefred, Winnie, Minnie and Davis, Davies. Any other ideas please.
Many thanks
Anne
