I am just about to order a copy of a will of someone who died last year, almost certainly in Chester. However, the probate registery in this case is London. Does anyone know why that should be?

It was the prefered Registry of the Solicitor or the Executor if they handled it themselves.

Probate forms don't need to be handed in to the nearest office to the deceased's abode or place of death. As long as the Treasury gets their cut, they couldn't care less!

Thank you for the explanation - that makes sense!

OH's mother died in Worthing. OH was the executor and we live in Scotland. The nearest registry in England/Wales was in Carlisle, so probate was granted there.

About as far from Worthing as you could get!!

We live in the Medway area of Kent . I did my husbands probate last year and had to send it to the probate office in Brighton

No reason for that other than they closed the nearest one at Maidstone and transferred the responsibility for this area to Brighton
