hello

Please could anyone tell me if its possible to search the censuses by address?

I am trying to find out who lived on a farm on TROUGHWELL (or TROUGH WELL) LANE, WRENTHORPE, WAKEFIELD from around 1880 - 1911 censuses. As far as I know there was only one house on Troughwell Lane until it was fully built up in the 1960s.

many thanks for any advice

Cassie :-)

You CAN search by address. I have had a look for Troughwell Lane but nothing comes up. Do you know of a street near it as Wrenthorpe does come up.

EDIT - There is a Trough Lane in the 1901 census. There is nothing actually next to it but underneath is Sycamore Cottage with a Davis family living there. Not sure if this is the place you are looking for.

In the 1891 census there are quite a few families living in Trough Lane so this might not be the place you mean.

Thanks Kath. Its known as Troughwell and Trough Well Lane, Wrenthorpe, Wakefield so both will be correct

Please could you tell me how to search on addresses?

We're not sure when the houses were built but at one time (we have a photo (date unknown) there was only one farm house.

many thanks
cassie

If you are searching the census years on Genes I am not sure how the searches are done as I never use the records on Genes. I use Findmypast.

Have tried to send you the 1901 census image by private message. Hope you get it.

Thanks very much for that Kath very much appreciated. It is Genes Reunited I search on so maybe I will have to join Findmypast also.

Trough Lane in the earlier censuses is therefore the same place as Trough Well Lane, a School Lane comes next in them too.

I know 1861 isn't in the time range specified, but just for interest:

What is called Trough Lane in later censuses is in two parts in 1861 - Trough Hill and Trough Lane.

Trough Hill, all with households:
George & Agnes Taylor
John Tatersdill
John & Mary Roberts
Frederick Appleyard
David Copley
William & Sarah Roberts

Trough Lane - all with households:
James & Mary Lees
Hannah Gigghams
(One uninhabited house)
George Calvert
Samuel Calvert
Thomas & Mary Ramsden
Henry & Jane Hudson
---- (the Hudsons' children are on the next page, where the address is given as Carr Gate, but that's a different road - enumerator's clerical error.)

1851 also shows both Trough Hill and Trough Lane - Beautiful handwriting on that census!
EDIT:
Well, it lists them on the first page, as being in the area covered, but there's no mention of them in the pages which follow with lists of families.

So it seems that the old houses were gradually demolished from 1911 onwards, and then new ones built some time between 1939 and 1960's.

Your photo will date from approx. 1940-60's.
