Yes, I should have been more specific - not every family would follow the rules every time.

And the quote above only says "Many families . . . ", not "All families . . ."

A large part of my ancestry is Scottish but, it became apparent in my own tree that not every area in Scotland adhered to the naming tradition.

Areas including Lanarkshire, Stirlingshire and Midlothian families tended to keep to the tradition.

Families from Aberdeenshire, Banffshire and Argyllshire in my tree , usually had children named for their ancestors but, there was no definitive pattern

I'm not aware of any difference.

Is this also your thread, with a reply saying the same thing??

The second paragraph of this (below) would seem to indicate that the usual rules were followed:

THE KINTYRE ANTIQUARIAN and NATURAL HISTORY SOCIETY MAGAZINE
"Many families followed the Scottish naming patterns, calling the eldest son after his paternal grandfather, and the eldest daughter after the maternal grandmother."

Naming patterns in Scotland are usually:
1st son named after paternal grandfather.
2nd son named after maternal grandfather
3rd son named after father

1st daughter named after maternal grandmother
2nd daughter named after paternal grandmother
3rd daughter named after mother

Any one know if this differs for the area of Kintyre, Argyllshire, Scotland

Thanks Flora
