Kala

Kala Report 26 Jan 2017 23:48

My great-grandmother, Lilian Elisabeth Nilsson 1897-1969, was born in Gateshead. Her father, Charles Nilsson was Swedish and a machine worker and fixer. He had 7 children born alive but only 4 living in 1911 (only 3 are listed on the census). I'm having difficulty find a mother for Lilian as on the 1911 census the mother is absent and a housekeeper is in her place. Their is Charles, the housekeeper, Lilian and her two sisters (Alice Ellen and Bernadina Annie) listed on the census. The three girls have their place of birth listed as Gateshead.

The confusion comes when I tried to go back and find a name for their mother on the 1901 census. I couldn't find anything for 1901. I did however find several other Swedish born Charles Nilsson/Nelson who list their occupation as machine worker/fixer (all roughly the same age) listed on different 1891 census'. This massively confused me as now I'm struggling to find which family Lilian belonged to. We also thought it was a bit coincidentle that 3 different men with different wives and homes all had the same name, were all Swedish and all roughly the same age living in the same area of the north east. Am I reading too much into it or could it be the same man?

I'm also struggling to find a birth record for Bernadina Annie in the U.K. However I did find one for an Anne Bernadina in Sweden at the time of Bernadina's birth so I am confused here too.

The only person alive on that side of my family is my mother and she hasn't a clue about any of it, she had always thought that Lilian (her grandmother) was born and and raised in Sweden and then moved to the north east as an adult but she recalls her mother saying that Lilian lived in Sweden and almost married into Swedish royalty until she met her husband and moved to England. Lots of embellishment obviously but we're all totally clueless now!!

Any insight or help with ANY of this at all would be brilliant.

Thank you.
Kelsey
