I wonder if this is the older child Dorothy ...............

OAKLEY, DOROTHY MAY -
GRO Reference: 1916 M Quarter in ROMFORD Volume 04A Page 984

no mother's maiden name, therefore illegitimate.

You'd have to buy the birth certificate to see if the mother was indeed Emily May, and to see if a father was named.

Grans Parents where Thomas and Emma Oakley whose Grandson Edward
Thomas Oakley was born 1911.
I have no record at all of when or where my mums older suster Dorothy was born.
But her accent was northern.
I think l may have traced my mums father to Chorley where he died of t.b. around 1945.
Although l'm not sure because l can't find anything about him since the wedding.

Yes that is where my mother was placed. Apparently boys where one side of the road, girls the other. Then placed in the appropriate house according to their age.
Mum says they used to go camping at Aintree racecourse.
I knew my grandmother and mums siblings when l was growing up.
But what l want to know is who l actually write to for information.
I did send a detailed letter to what l thought was a records office, but was told it was
The wrong place.
I will collate the info you need. And write in again.
To give you something to think about. On my grandmothers marriage
Certificate her husband was described as PTE # 552818 16th batt S Lancs Reg
Thanks
Coal miner.
Address at time of marriage was Prescot Watch Factory in Liverpool

Shirley~I,m getting the hang of it Report 10 Feb 2017 04:45

Well my FIL was put in a home in 1906 his parents weren't married but the dad was a commercial traveller who moved around with his job but supported the famiiy . Somwhere along the line they separated .

Dad always thought he went into Barnardos but they had no record of him

It took a lot of looking ,and ringing up homes in the area he lived in Birmingham to finally track him to the Kings Norton Cottage Homes

These were run by the Poor Law Union and later taken over by the local council . I contacted them and was passed around a bit but was finally passed to a lady in the social services admin who said she would look up the info but it wouldn't be quick

It took some time for the council to come back and tell us he had been in the home with just a small synopsis of his time in there . Looking into their archives wasn't a priority for their time

So I would say .get the birth cert, and then try googling for cottage homes in the area and then contact the archives who may have records

Be prepared though for long waits for any responses

Re her brother who you say is on the 1911 as Grandson ..............

Your grandmother was not married to your grandfather until 1918, and your mother was then born in 1920

The brother must therefore be a half-brother ................... either born illegitimately to your grandmother or to her in a first marriage.

Again, we need his name, and the name of his grandparents and of your grandmother so that we can help you.

SylviaInCanada Report 10 Feb 2017 03:23

OK

If we are to help you, we need the name of your Mum so that we can try to trace her.

Hi and Thanks for the reply.
My mum was born in Wigan in Oct 1920. Her Father was called
Thomas and Married my grandmother in Oswestry in 1918..
I have their marriage certificate.
To complicate matters my mum also had a brother who l grew up knowing.
But he was down as Grandson on the 1911 census of my gt grandparents.
My grandmother was in domestic service.
I have no idea if my mum and her siblings share the same father.
Its all these questions l hope to answer.
I have looked at cottage homes many times. It only refers to the time before my
Mum lived there. I dont know what name it went under when mum was there.
I have never seen it mentioned anywhere. Why didn'5tml do all this while mum was alive !

SylviaInCanada Report 10 Feb 2017 01:04

well, start by finding your mum's birth registration, get the name of her father

Then you can start working back.

Also Google Cottage Homes, and see if there are any surviving records.

We can help you find your mum's birth registration and any such records, including any siblings.

You will have to do the Google search and contact the homes yourselfyourself

What was your mother's name?

Dorothy Report 9 Feb 2017 23:52

My mum was raised in the orphanage known as cottage Homes in Fazackerley
Near Liverpool. She was put in there aged two when her dad did a runner.
Her mum worked as a housekeeper in Wigan.
I was able to take mum to see the place on her 80th Birthday.
Its now been taken over by various organisations.
I knew my granma, but not granddad.
Mum also got to meet a sister while she was in there. I was later
Named after her.
But now l have this hole in my tree and dont know who to contact
To get mums records, if that is possible.
Hope someone can advise me
