Son in law vs step son

In the 1871 census have an 8 y.o. Boy who's relationship to head of household is son in law. I know that the head of house is not his father but the heads wife is the boy's mother. Therefore this would make the boy the head of house's stepson. Is the description "son in law" just a sign of the age i.e 1871, and actually does mean stepson. Just looking to clarify. |
