An apparently well-researched tree on Ancestry ("belonging" to a great-grandchild of Walter) says that the witnesses to the marriage were I Laxton and Alfred Noel. Address given at time of marriage as 44 Charteris Road, London NW6.

The tree also says that Walter Edward's parents were Robert Day (born 1847 Hickling, Norfolk, died 1910 London) and Ellen Selina Hodgins (1853 Watford - 1930 Watford).

Westminster, London, England, Church of England Marriages and Banns, 1754-1935
Name Robert Day
Gender Male
Marriage Age Full Age
Marriage Date 10 Jul 1873
Marriage Place St Peter, Eaton Square, Pimlico, London, England
Parish as it Appears St Peters Pimlico
Father George Day
Spouse Ellen Selina Hodgins

The tree (which has lots of documentary evidence, and lots of info re siblings, etc) says that Robert's parents were George Day (1821-1902, Norfolk) and Mary Hawksworth (1821 Norfolk - 1891 Notts.)

Walter Edward died on 4 Oct 1936 in Lewisham (though his age stated at death doesn't fit with birth in 1879:

DAY, WALTER EDWARD 52
GRO Reference: 1936 D Quarter in LEWISHAM Volume 01D Page 1064

His birth:

DAY, WALTER EDWARD mmn HODGINS
GRO Reference: 1882 D Quarter in WEST HAM Volume 04A Page 180

The tree says he had a visitor named Nellie Balders in 1921 - at Bellamy's Wharf, Rotherhithe . She called herself Day in 1939:

Nellie Day
in the 1939 England and Wales Register
Name: Nellie Day [Nellie Balders]
Gender: Female
Marital Status: Widowed
Birth Date: 19 Mar 1891
Residence Date: 1939
Address: 60
Residence Place: Lewisham, London, England
Occupation: Domestic Duties
Line Number: 40
Schedule Number: 256
Sub Schedule Number: 1
Enumeration District: Aotz
Borough: Lewisham
Registration district: 3/39b
Household Members (Name) Age
Nellie Day 48

Presumably this is him in 1921 - he's with a Nellie:

Marie is listed as NOEL on the GRO index.

If you do order the marriage certificate, be sure to request names exactly as shown on the index.

ie. do not quote full names unless they are shown on the index

Where did you find the exact date and father's name?

What was the groom's address? And his occupation?

Father's occupation?

thanks for the info, much appreciated. I've come to a full stop on my father's side because i only have a name and no dates. i thought if i could get the marriage certificate of the son of this person, i can get the info on his parents and get further in the tree. The marriage certificate i need is between Walter Edward Day (birth 1879)
and Marie Isobel Adele Noele (birth1885) they were married on the 16/11/1901. Walter Edward day has a father named Robert Day but i cant find anything else on him or his wife. There have been family tales of him leaving his wife and family, one tale was that he had married another whilst still being married, and had another family somewhere.
If anyone can help that would be great, i can go on to hopfully solve the mystery.

FMP and Ancestry hold some certificate images

GR has never held such info.

Tell us which marriage you are interested in and someone will have a look

Civil registration began in 1837 although it wasn’t necessary to do so for some years.
Have a look at freebmd.org.uk

Before that and sometimes afterwards the only record was the church register.

It depends what year the marriage was. Most of the images of marriage records on Findmypast are from the 1800's.

More recent ones you will just get the GRO reference so you can order the certificate.

Genes don’t hold copies of any certificates

They will give the GRO ref that you would need to order a copy

Ancestry does have some parish copies of marriages but it’s hit or miss if it’s one you are interested in
