I have downloaded a naval record which, at the end, says w for pension 26 Nov 1879.
Googling has not helped me. I expect it is something obvious so could anyone tell me? Thank you.

Without seeing the record, it's hard, if not impossible, to think what it could be.

Where did you find the record? Is it possible for you to post a link, or copy/paste it for us to see?

Where have you downloaded the record from and who is it for.

Knowing the context of the lettering /wording may help to determine what it relates to.

If you've downloaded from a pay to view site ie TNA then perhaps you could upload to your Keepsafe on here and make the record public so we can look at it there or copy and paste to here.

It was from the National Archives UK site. At the end of the page where the ship were listed it said GC badge ( which I realise is Good Conduct), then w for pension and a date in Nov 1879. This I believe to be the date he left the navy.

? a shortening of wef - with effect from? But still not guaranteed that's what it is without knowing more.

When were his start and end of service dates?

Countrymouse has sent via PM a photocopy of what I presume is just part of this person's RN service history.

Whoever he was, his DoB was 3 Jan 1855 ( a date written immediately prior to the date he joined Orantes and worked out by the entry for when he attained age 18)

Listed are the dates he served where in what rate -

HMS Orantes from 9 Aug 1870 to 14 August 1871 as a Boy 2nd Class
HMS Orantes 15 Aug 1871 to 27 Oct 1871 as a Boy 1st class
HMS Sirius 28 Oct 1871 to 7 June 1872 as Boy 1st class
HMS Sirius 8 June 1872 to 31 Dec 1872 as Boy 1st class
Attained the age of 18 on 3 Jan 1873 and continued from then for 6 years and 310 days on HMS Sirius until 7 Nov 1879 when he joined
HMS Royal Adelaide (which although commissioned in 1860 was converted to serve as a depot ship in 1860). It says at this stage he was a Stoker. Whilst there he would no doubt have completed his leaving routines and his service ceased
He had been awarded 1 (G.C.) Good Conduct Badge

The final entry is W: for Pension 26 Nov 1879 o.n. 67497
I would read this as he was eligible for Pension from 26 Nov 1879 and his Official No. was 67497

It was not until 1859 that pensions for service were granted automatically to all ratings who had served 20 consecutive years in the Royal Navy. Either rules had changed in the interim period or he had perhaps sustained an injury to warrant the earlier award?

Thanks Greyghost, I,ve also been sent the picture. I,ve it got much power on my IPad, but wouldn’t he have had to do about 20 years for the pension ( no power to look it up).
I did wonder if it was a war pension which might have a different time period?

His conduct was always "very good" or excellent.

HMS Wolverene was in Australia. Charles may have sailed in the ship from Sheerness in 1976 to being the Commodores flagship in australia. Charles may have ben apid off in Australia.

Thank you to Argyllgran, nameless one and greyghost. I didn't have access to ancestry and decided to trace this family on whom I had been completely stuck last time I looked. What I found was through familysearch and a free download from TNA therefore some of this is new to me. Thank you very much.
I have also found some descendants of Elizabeth's (Lewin) which may help with DNA matches.
