You need the GRO ref but can order a certified paper copy cost £11 or a downloadable pdf copy cost £7

If it’s just for research then the pdf copy is sufficient

All the above advice is for births which were registered in England or Wales.

If in Scotland, you need to order through ScotlandsPeople.
For Ireland: https://www.gov.ie/en/service/124a70-apply-for-certificates/

Other countries also have their own systems.
