Wow, things have moved on here. My immediate family, father, uncles and grandparents all lived in derby so its a good chance that John Thomas Gills wife was the one from Derby. All these names and dates have got me confused though. With the extra information of my immediate family living in Derby how does this make the tree and link to the IoM. In fact have they linked. I'm dyslexic so without them neatly written in front of me I struggle to piece them together. Although I'm off to write them all down. :D

moe Report 20 Feb 2006 18:07

LOL...... zoe, you can imagine the registrar at the wedding 'are you a Gill or a Gell?' William says 'well i am a Gilll she is a Gell' 'or is it the other way round, ,,,,,MOE!

Zoe

Zoe Report 20 Feb 2006 18:02

Moe I thought enough of the names and ages matched to make it likely that the enumerator was so up to his ears in Gill's and Gell's he put the name down wrong - i could be mistaken tho - I'm willing to be corrected Zoe

moe

moe Report 20 Feb 2006 17:56

Zoe, on your thread before you mentioned that Gill could also be Gell.On Family search both these names are well established on the island Gell dating back over 150 years, do you think that was just a wierd coincidence?,,,,,,MOE!

thought I remembered the names from ian's thread about thother bit of his family: Ronald Gill was born 30 Nov 1924 which gives three possibilities on ancestry BETA Mothers maiden name = Hart (W derby), Gill (Bradford) or Smith (Hammersmith)

OMG is there really a Gill with the name Caesar? That's so weird. I play american football for the Nottingham Caesars. One of the little things we like to say is 'Caesar till we die.' It looks like he was a Caesar till he died. :) This side of the family is the one I'm struggling to get very far with which is unfortunate as it's my surname and the one I'd like to go the furthest with.

Sorry Ian, I'm admitting defeat here .... the only dates you have are too (ahem!) recent! None of the free online resources can deal with this - and I'm out of guesses! GILL is a pretty common surname on the Isle of Man (and elsewhere) so there are no easy pickings - guess you might have realised that too! Isle of Man BMDs are not listed on FreeBMD - yay, I've learnt something new today!! The way forward as I'm sure you know is to find a marriage cert for your Gt Grandparents ... which is probably in about 1920. Then you'll at least have a name from your Gtx2 Grandpa - hopefully he'll have been called something really unusual like Leopold and then we can find him easily. (You think I jest - there's one IoM GILL family member with a 'Caesar' as his middle name!!) Hope you haven't been mugged by your 2-year old yet ..... and happy hunting! Jane

Were struggling here to get past my great granddad. John Thomas Gill = Annie (Not sure of her surname) They had 5 children Jean, Ronald (My grandfather), Charles, Edward and Tommy My dad remembers meeting John Thomas in Liverpool so we presume he lived there.
