Impact of cuts to local authority funding

OneFootInTheGrave Report 19 Nov 2014 11:00

It appears to me that this report is saying, I may be wrong, that the Department for Communities and Local Government, has made cuts to the funding given to local authorities and they have made these cuts without any fully considering how these would affect the services that local authorities provide.

Extract from National Audit Office report released today on local authority funding and how local authorities are coping with them:-

According to the NAO, however, the Department does not monitor in a coordinated way the impact of funding reductions on services, and relies on other departments and inspectorates to alert it to individual service failures. In consequence, the Department risks becoming aware of serious problems with the financial sustainability of local authorities only after they have occurred.

The Departments processes for assessing the capacity of authorities to absorb further funding reductions are also not sufficiently robust.

How have these cuts affected services provided by your local authority?

For my LA these funding cuts have led to various 'consultation' documents & meetings. In summary, the LA is stating that residents are going to have a say in which services to keep/reduce and which to eliminate. These alterations are expected to save a stated £75M over the next three years.

Of course, we have been given no indication of the likely incremental savings from each of the proposed changes.
