Alexa, an interesting site Rollo. Notice that it says 67% sites are faster than GR. :-D :-D

Kense

Kense Report 18 Jan 2016 16:42

I managed to get an error message using my Kindle Fire to look at My Threads but I haven't seen one on my PC (which uses the same router) for weeks. PC ping time is 10ms

PS I see the stickied message has gone from this board - so GR are still about.

I can try 3 or 4 times to get into My Threads, and still get the Error message.

I have none of your ISPs as I am on a different continent not just a different country :-D

The ISP I do have is one of the largest and best in this country.

I also have WiFi which apparently has about a 200' radius, although I have not tried that .............. that is free with my ISP

I think everything is due to the fact that GR is letting the site go .........

...... several of us have already been told basically that the site is now down to the members. I guess they hope that if they let it deteriorate enough then we'll all creep away, silently.

I am not getting any error messages but I have to log in twice. I have always logged out and logged back in next time. Now, when I log in, I press submit, the page disappears and then goes back to login. The second time I get in.

I have BT and I don't blame my router,
I blame the fiddling about that goes on in this site.

RolloTheRed

Try "my threads" again after the first error returned it should be ok.

BrightSolid seem to have been making changes and rearrangements again. They appear to contracted with Cogent Communications ( a large US comms co) and shifted the server back to Dundee. As a result a visual trace shows that the connection is now via Cogent US to Dundee with a ping > 140ms. No wonder some people are getting timeout errors!

This sort of thing is always annoying but cheap basic routers tend to make ithings worse. Of the major ISPs current router ratings: BT - excellent, Virgin Hub2 - fair, TalkTalk 2015 and later, good (earlier poor), Sky poor, EE average.

By and large replacing the ISP router with something better will improve performance, wifi a whole lot and extend options. That applies in spades to Virgin. AFAIK Sky don't give the choice. OTOH a decent home/SOHO router costs around £ 100 and tends to be overkill for just a couple of users not needing gaming and with no biz needs. A router with good wifi will extend range to the shed which may by some be seen as good news.

I am completely unable to get into My Threads ..... the error message never stops

So I have to go Board by Board to find the threads I might be interested in or have been following.

I keep getting it when I try to get "My threads" - everything else is OK

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 16 Jan 2016 17:44

soooooooooo .................

I get the error message with My Threads on either .co.uk or .co.za

I do not use Watched Threads

I have NO problems opening General Chat, Genealogy Chat, Find Ancestors or Suggestions.

General Chat has over 24,300 pages, Find Ancestors almost 26,000, Genealogy Chat over 4,000.

I can't get into My Threads to check, but I don't think I am anywhere near 20,000 pages :-D

I even tried Success Stories and Military Chat the other day, with no problem

Nothing makes any sense ......... whether that be what Kense or Rollo says, except that GR is letting the site run down.

Rollo's comments re distance from server makes little sense to me .............. as people close to the GR server are having as many problems as I am.

and what Rollo suggests re the running down of GR and folding over in FMP is something that I have been saying since the last sale of this site.

Has anyone complained to GR by email, and if so, what was their response??

BT Infinity to the junction box at the end of the road- there is no physical cable option in the area
Ping 9ms
Download 37.49 Mps
Upload 9.45 Mps

It might well have connected to one close to Croydon although in the past its chosen one in Sittingbourne

Not only error message but now being thrown
out on occasion.

RolloTheRed

RolloTheRed Report 16 Jan 2016 11:58

no ;

the problem is related to distance from the server + user's speed of connection and ping time. Try running a speed checker. Ping should be around 18ms and anything > 30ms will give problems. Similarly net connection < 4 Mb/sec - common with USB Key connections or mobile data - can create timeouts. Lastly if there are a lot of nodes between the server and user timeout errors are more likely than not. This mainly affects users in OZ, Canada etc.

There is only one server located in Greater London nr Croydon. There are no servers in other countries.

Most web sites use Apache web servers which out-of-the-box are fairly easy to setup for resilience so that users get a result regardless of connection quality.

GR uses a Microsoft IIS 7 server which is picky. IIS is really designed for company intranets not publicly facing web servers. However Bright Sold's main biz is yeah, company intranets so DCTFH have to live with what they are given. IIS7 is not the best choice if the budget is tight either. Setting up IIS7 to allow flaky connections also leaves it very open to being hacked.

My guess is that at some point GR will quietly disappear absorbed by FMP and the Facebook site. It has the "do not resusicate" feel of web sites at the end of the line. Even Errol has gone away.
