I have had a response to my email ,

basically "I have passed the details of this specific issue to our technical team to look at and investigate."

Karen Allan
Genes Reunited Support Team

but coincidentally I reported something on the FMP FB page, and just had a response to that too from

Karen Allan

:-) I hope she's being paid double ;-)

I had never ever had the My Threads error message until somebody moaned about it on the boards *cough* Sylvia *cough* a couple of weeks ago and I made the mistake of reading it and bingo, caught the bug

the internet is like the baby boom, getting on and starting to get creaky bits ... we may have to start reading the dead website obituary columns for our old friends more regularly and with more trepidation .... what we need is rest homes for elderly websites where they can retire and we can visit and take them flowers from time to time ...

I can get into my Inbox

but I still can't get into My Threads

Ken, the response from GR support team was

" We can only leave your account as it is there is nothing the technical team can do in the background to change this I am afraid.

Although you show as having a large balance the credits have expired and are not available for use so we cannot delete them or adjust this from this side.

They will simply sit as expired credits in your account."

what's happening is no surprise.

I've posted several times that several of us, including myself, received emails last year that basically said we were on our own.

get us all to leave, and they will be able to close down GR as having no visitors, and therefore get around any complaints, or any conditions that might have been instituted by the Competitions Board.

Mission complete ......... remove one of the competitors to your own site.

Wonder if they will now take on ancestry, or vice versa .............. thus leaving the UK with only 1 of the 3 top sites that existed only a few years ago.

I'm not sure where that leaves the Genealogist (is that what it is called?)

The overall impression I get is that sales have hired a few work experience / under 21 min wage people with plenty of FB experience, an iPhone (each) and a sketchy knowledge of creating a web page using 1to1 or similar.

Now armed with not much more than JavaScript for Dummies, CSS In Your Coffee and O'Reilly "Microsoft IIS Configuration and Annoyances" they are doing their best to integrate GR with FB. Hevan knows what they make of the FB SDK.

The current timeouts and errors are indicative of a site being starved of sufficient bandwidth, very poorly configured and getting zero maintenance. Such sites are usually on a road to nowhere.

Now and again a IIS tuning expert comes in from BrightSolid but charges them a couple of hundred bucks per hour so that is kept to a minimum.

There never was a tech manual for the code base and now it has lost forever inside the mind of Phil Moire.

I guess that the board of D C Thomson are less worried about the slow death of GR and with it what remains of the revenue stream than who forked out £ 20 million to digitise the 1939 ration book register and who agreed to commercially impossible disclosure terms. Companies the size of DCT cannot usually absorb a hit as large as £ 20M.

I should have thought that the technical team can solve the wrong credits problem simply by not outputting credit lines where the expiry date is 01/01/0001.

Rollo - They’ve been there for a couple of years. There might have been one for Interflora at one time.
The linked page has a pop-up box “Afternoon Tea For Two will stop taking new orders on Friday 20th February 2015 at 9AM.”. There’s other blurb which may or may not be still relevant.
The one for Hotel Exclusives might still work.
Genes linked up with Penguin Books about 2 years ago. That went deathly quiet sometime last year.

The offers might have been an attempt to generate revenue. After all, they don’t get anything from 3rd parties advertising on the site as that messed it up even more!
………

Apparently I had 2 unread messages in my inbox yesterday. Yes, they were there but duplicates to ones already received a few days before and accessed. Nothing extra in the linked email account.
