It's probably because daffodils are toxic if eaten (by humans or animals), so health and safety probably insist on the warning.

I have bought loads of Asda daffodils just lately at £1 a bunch and they have been really lovely. Completely closed up when bought but every one has opened up and lasted really well.

Sadly some customers mistook them for edibles! Stores had to make sure they were only displayed with the other flowers and not at the end of random aisles or in entrance paths.....

The number of poisoning cases rockets every March with some non- English speakers mistaking the spring flower for the garlic chives often used in Chinese cooking.

Asda's daffodils are quite often displayed on their own at the end of the check-outs or in the entrance lobby!

Daffodils here are usually kept in dry buckets, especially in the grocery stores ..............

and come with the instruction to cut ca ½" off the bottom of the stems and put into water. They are believed to last longer when kept dry before selling.

But we are not told not to eat them!!

Mind you, they are usually with the flowers or in special displays near the checkouts but NOT right at the end of an aisle.

or maybe we're just considered to be intelligent enough to know that you don't eat most flowers :-D

I queried in Lidl why Daffs were kept in dry buckets and apparently it's on instruction from the growers. When cut they seal over so stay fresher and in bud till taken home to a vase of water, when they will open 0.

Liz .................

that's the explanation we were given.

It's been done that way for about 3 years here.

Sainsburys display them in the boxes they arrive in. We'd always assumed it was to save space :-S

Daffodils here are always put into metal buckets, whether it is in stores or independent flower shops.
