The 1961 & 1963 birth entries for the two boys differ in page numbers and birth quarters.

1963 shows appears to be what should have been the correct entires for 1961.

I'm assuming Barry and Garry were twins.

If, by some chance, they were Emily's children, and if they were to be adopted in 1963, maybe some change might have been made prior to adoption??

Can't think what - correction to DOB? addition of a father's name??

It would be a very long shot to buy a copy of one of the certs, but Valerie might think it worth it, just to find out.

Strange, but the original Surrey registration also has a Garry Simpson, and he appears on the GRO index so not a mistranscriptiom by freebmd.

Also the late entry in June 1963 has entries for both Barry & Garry - the GRO reference is 5G/499 - although this hasn't been transcribed on freebmd. Both are under Simpson with mmn Simpson so not sure what changes were made.

Argyllgran wondered if the late entry had something to do with adoption, but I doubt it - although the original birth cert would be marked as adopted, new details would not be on the GRO register but would be on the adoption register.

Don't waste your money buying that Peaden certificate. There's a marriage that corresponds to that birth, plus several siblings.

Thanks for editing your opening post to include more information, Valerie.

I'm guessing, from the records, that your mother reverted to her maiden name after her divorce from Thomas .
(Apologies if I'm wrong about that.)

There are two Barry Simpson births, with mother's name Simpson, one in 1961 in Surrey Northern reg district, and one in 1963 in Bury.

You would have to buy copies of the certs to see if either of them was your mother's son.
I'll PM you the reference details you would need to order copies.

EDIT:
the 1961 birth record has been amended by hand on the GRO Index, re the page number. The handwritten note says "see J63". FreeBMD says "This entry appears to be a late entry however the entry referred to cannot be found, either because it is not identical to this entry or because it has not yet been transcribed."

It should mean that there was a later entry, in the June quarter of 1963, but I can't see one which looks like a possible variation in that quarter. The 1963 Simpson record I mentioned above was in the 3rd quarter - and in a different area, in any case..

I'm assuming Barry was adopted, Valerie?
Maybe the amendment is something to do with adoption? The dates would fit with what you said in your opening post. I'm not sure how the system works - I'm sure some other helper will know the answer.
Could he have been re-registered under another name in 1963?

The names I have mentioned are Phelan in the marriage records
and Peaden in the birth search.
There is a marriage for a Barry H Peaden in York in 1985. Cant say whether
the H should be an N.
Maybe best to get a copy birth cert for Barry.
Good luck

Valerie, hi,
I know records show Emily marrying a Thomas PHELAN in 1945
But I wonder whether this is the correct name, because there is a
birth entry for Durham for Jan quarter of 1963 for a Barry N PEADEN
ref for obtaining copy cert is 1a 634
Ill do a little more checking, but there may have been a mis transcription.
So we need to verifyPhelan or Peaden.

Thomas died in 1991.

Big coincidence if there was another Emily Selina with the same DOB.
A tree on Ancestry says that's her death in 2003 - though doesn't mention a remarriage, nor, presumably, a separation from Thomas.

However, that's all irrelevant, and no help re the son.

She did marry Thomas Phelan as Valerie has those children's names in her tree.

Not that any of that helps find her son, I'm afraid.

It just means that we can't find her birth. Perhaps the DOB given on her death record is wrong.

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 3 Sep 2016 21:00

That rules out that Emily, then. (Also because of the death and possible marriage below.)

Do you know your brother's name, Valerie?

I'm assuming this is Emily's death:

Hi, Valerie -

Unfortunately, Simpson is such a common name that it's impossible to pick out the right birth.

Do you know if that would have been his surname?
Do you know roughly where he might have been born?

Is Simpson Emily's maiden surname? If so, I don't see her birth in 1926.
There's an Emily S Simpson born in Sunderland, but later in the year.

I'm assuming these people live(d) in the UK ??
