I have been researching my granddad who was killed in WW1 but was awarded the DCM in a battle at the Yser Canal. I was given a website where I might find out exactly what happened when he got the DCM and where he was, also I wanted to find out where he actually got his fatal injuries. Wow, what a find - the National Archives have published the War Diaries of different regiments. If you know which regiment your relation fought with then for £3.36 you can download the war diaries for that particular regiment which gives a day by day account of where they were, what they were doing, wounded, killed etc. I've been able to plot exactly where my granddad was from when he embarked on 14th April 1914 up to him being killed on 3rd May 1917. Give it a try the address is http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/records/war-diaries-ww1.htm if you can't find them under the Brigade Diaries, try the Battallion. :-D |
