Sue Report 27 Dec 2010 17:33

I am hitting a dead end regarding my great grandfather ( jacob Cresswell), he was born 1868 in Longhoughton, Northumberland but only shows up from 1891 in the census, his father was also called jacob and was deceased by the time of his son's marriage in 1891, he was listed as a coach owner and my greatgrandfather was a coach driver, any help would be deeply appreciated ( Jacob jr lived in Chilton moor then moved to Durham city by 1901)

thanks

I know 1911 said Long Houghton, but seemed strange to have a Jacob Cresswell born c1868 living in Houghton Le Spring Durham in 1891, which is the birthplace of at least one of Jacob's children in census 1911.

Also looks like Jacob may have married in Houghton:

Cresswell Jacob Houghton 10a 663

Kucinta Report 27 Dec 2010 18:40

I think the problem was the Jacob Cresswell living in Houghton Le Spring in 1891 was recorded to have been born in Newcastle upon Tyne, rather than Long Houghton; I'm not sure this was grounds for dismissing him as birth places often vary from census to census.

It also seemed sensible to flag up that his birthplace might be in doubt.

However Sue may come back and reject the 1891 Houghton le Spring Jacob as a red herring.

Hi Janet

I figure it's best to put up any leads - at least, that's what I did, and let Sue decide what she thinks is worth pursuing, it's her thread after all :)

Kucinta Report 27 Dec 2010 19:10

Had a quick look at that thread, but think it's another family. That Jacob 1836 did have a son Jacob, but he married a Martha.

Father and son died within a few years of each other:

On Jacobs juniors marriage it says father Jacob is deceased.

Katie Report 30 Dec 2010 20:16

Hi Mary,

I saw that Jacob said his father was deceased but many people lied for many reasons when marrying etc. Jacob Krausgrill the younger disappears after 1881, he does not marry, die or emigrate. Jacob Cresswell first appears in 1891 on the census. The rest of the family keep the Krausgrill surname into the 20th century.
Perhaps he became estranged from his family because of the name change - or perhaps he changed his name unofficially. He names his father as Cresswell on his marriage cert but there is also no trace of anyone with this name in a census or being born/baptised, marrying or dying.
It all seems too much of a coincidence to me. Many Germans anglicised their names at that time.
