trying to find the birth certificate of my maternal grandfather EDWIN ELKIN died 1949 aged 70 in Portsmouth, married my grandmother Laura Pollentine 12 May 1921 in Portsmouth. He was a Musical Director. His father was named as EDWIN ELKIN Patternmaker deceased on the marriage certificate. Family folklore has it that his mother was called JESSIE and he had a sister LIZZIE. Any connections gratefully received - many thanks. Fay Lewis

how old was he when he died?

KathleenBell

KathleenBell Report 26 Feb 2010 21:29

His death entry gives his age as 70 in 1949 (this can be out by a few years depending on how well the informant knew him). There is this birth as a possible:-

Name: Edwin Elkin
Year of Registration: 1881
Quarter of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep
District: Stone
County: Staffordshire
Volume: 6b
Page: 26

There is another birth for this name around the same time but this one has a middle name, and there is no middle name on his marriage or death reference.

Kath, the one you found in 1881 has a father John, not Edwin.

I am stuck.

I found an Edwin Henry Elkin b Jun 1878, Radford, Nottinghamshire.

But nothing more on him.

Edwin's marriage is there. Snowy Jen has got it.

Nothing else at all.

Now I'm just looking at these dates we have. Edwin Elkin who died 1949 was born 1879. He married Laura Pollentine in 1921. That means he was 42. Pretty old for a first marriage. Very old some might say. But it seems that Fay has that marriage cert, so can you just confirm Fay that he was 42? Was he a widower? Possibly not, these musical director chaps can be quite eccentric and not conform to the norm. Otherwise they'd be cotton weavers, like all my ancestors. How old was Laura at marriage?

Who were the witnesses on the marriage cert?

If I have the right death of his father in 1893, then yes he was deceased.

But his mother was not, if she is Sarah Jane.

I'd be tempted to contact Portsmouth cemeteries, starting with municipal ones, and I bet a family like this might have had a headstone.

Their records might tell you who purchased the grave in 1893 and where they were living. And if there is anyone else in the grave that might give us a clue.

I am still stuck on census records though.

Would Ms Canuck care to take a look at this?

I'm going pot-eyed after only one page. Someone found a pattern maker? Ah, SnowyJen found Edwin b 1823., wife born 1818, too old, could be grandparents of young Edwin.

Not many wildcards you can use with a 5-letter surname.

Try again.

Perhaps, as in many instances, Edwin jnr used his grandfather's details when marrying, because his mother was unmarried. Just speculating about possible scenarios

The chap born c1822 was definitely a pattern-maker, as per my posting of 1881 census.

Feedback from Fay would be extremely helpful

Thanks very much everyone, I am a novice on this site and have only just found all your research. I will follow up on what you have found. I can confirm that Edwin was 42 on the marriage cert, my grandmother Laura Jeanette Pollentine gave her age as 24 in fact she was 29. The witnesses were her mother Raimonda Pollentine and a suspiciously named Laura Jeannette Grant. I believe there was some trouble in the family with bad feeling between my grandfather and his father Edwin the Patternmaker. My grandfather would never talk about it apparently. So it is a mystery I am keen to solve! Many thanks all. Sorry for the odd replies, I am still getting the hang of the site.
Regards, Fay
