Hello Kay

Thanks for your thanks. Is there anything else you want help with? e.g. the suspicious Laura Jeannette Grant?

Hello Madmeg, and thanks very much again to you and everyone else. No, I think on reflection the Laura Jeanette Grant must be a coincidence that she shares the same forenames as my grandmother or perhaps it was recorded wrongly. I think I will pursue the Edwin Elkins buried in 1893 in Portsea and the wife who could have been known as Jessie (Sarah Jane) and try and find a grave and who bought it so thanks for that suggestion. However I am still puzzled by the Edwin Elkin patternmaker born c.1823 married to Elizabeth on the 1871 census. Perhaps he fathered my grandfather in 1879 out of wedlock. Perhaps they just decided to break the law and not record the birth. I need to find out when Edwin Elkin patternmaker died I think. I've got plenty to work on now, thanks to you all.

Dear All, thank you for your help in the past, I have found out why I couldn't find my grandfather, he changed his name from Edwin Turner to Edwin Elkin some time after 1911 and before his marriage in 1921 (so during war perhaps) - I have found an Edwin Turner that fits the bill. Thanks again.
