I am trying to find out more about my Boorn family. George Boorn b abt 1826 London, married Eliza Fossit/Fawcet/Fossett b. abt 1824 London in Sept. 1847 Gloucestershire. Cannot find anything to back up this information. George and Eliza moved to Edinburgh and can be seen in the 1861 Census at 335 Canongate along with their family. All born England. In 1861 George is a Photographer. He must have joined the army because subsequent certificates show this. I cannot find him dying however he is alive in 1869 but deceased in 1871 according to the marriages of his twodaughters. Where can I go from here? Any help would be appreciated. |

Oh Sorry I have found their marriage, cannot find their birth. According to Eliza's death certificate (Edinburgh) informant was her nephew, her father was Henry Fossit and mother Sarah Ann James. |

I have been through to Edinburgh and searched many times for his death - Edinburgh is 'Scotlands people' now. I am thinking that he must have died in service somewhere. I have looked many places for his death, and birth. I appear to have hit a brick wall. |

This is an English Marriage Certificate and in 1847 - it does not provide names of parents. If I could have found his death certificate it hopefully would give me his parents names, his age at death etc. This is all too difficult. |

English marriage certificates have fathers names and occupations on them even in 1847,its the pre 1837 ones that dont as there were no certs and it was just parish..If they knew who their father was of course. |

OK it appears I will have to send for the marriage certificate - just hope that it is my George and Eliza or purchasing the certificate will be a waste of time and money. I have the reference numbers so will send for it in the near future. I was obviously getting mixed up with Scottish and English certificates where the Scottish pre 1855 do not give parents names or occupation. |

George and Eliza would have been abt. 25 years old and daughter Emma would be abt. 3 on the 1851 census. Perhaps Mary Ann would be months old as she was 10 on the 1861 in Edinburgh. I am having another look at Ancestry.com and am finding nothing on them what so ever. - they appear to have disappeared during that period. That is why I wonder if he was in the army and posted outwith Britain at that time - it is so easy to start assuming! |

I cannot find Eliza on the 1841 either - her parents (according to her death certificate information) were Henry Fosset and Sarah Ann James. I always feel death certificate information is dubious. the 1861 says she was born England, the 1871 says England, the 1881 and 1901 says Nunney in Somerset the 1891 says England. |

But as I said previously - the informant at death do not always hold the correct information - so I prefer to see the birth/marriage certificates also. William would not have known anything 'solid' about Eliza's parents. Information on them appears to be very fragmented. Actually on the 1881 it says Eliza was born Banbury - not Nunney - sorry |
