If Dee is getting nowhere then I doubt I will either.

The marriage cert is needed.

Freda Report 6 Nov 2010 23:58

I have also found that the name Boorn - has been translated as bourin, ( Eliza burn in the1881 census) and bourn

I will have a go again tomorrow Freda,I am too tired now.

Dragoon Guards,my Ggrandfather was in that too, never found his death either, sometime between 1872 and 1881 it has to have been though and G grandmother remarried ,to his BROTHER !,although it was a much more common name of John Callaghan..

But as I said previously - the informant at death do not always hold the correct information - so I prefer to see the birth/marriage certificates also. William would not have known anything 'solid' about Eliza's parents. Information on them appears to be very fragmented. Actually on the 1881 it says Eliza was born Banbury - not Nunney - sorry

Freda Report 6 Nov 2010 23:41

I cannot find Eliza on the 1841 either - her parents (according to her death certificate information) were Henry Fosset and Sarah Ann James. I always feel death certificate information is dubious. the 1861 says she was born England, the 1871 says England, the 1881 and 1901 says Nunney in Somerset the 1891 says England.
685/5 - 844 Eliza Boorn, General Dealer, widow of George Boorn, Sergeant, 3rdLight Dragoon Guards (Queens Own) died 27 July 1902 at 4Richmond Lane Edinburgh aged 73. Fatty Heart, Father Henry Fosset, Mother Sarah Ann James. Registered by William Harley (Grandson) 31 Buccleish Street, Edinburgh.

Do you know where Eliza was born and her parents names please?
If you have her on 1841 maybe just the county she was born in?
I know I ask a lot of questions but anything to to try and find them would help.

Really need that marriage cert it seems...
It has to be their marriage, the names are correct and the time.

Freda Report 6 Nov 2010 23:27

George and Eliza would have been abt. 25 years old and daughter Emma would be abt. 3 on the 1851 census. Perhaps Mary Ann would be months old as she was 10 on the 1861 in Edinburgh. I am having another look at Ancestry.com and am finding nothing on them what so ever. - they appear to have disappeared during that period. That is why I wonder if he was in the army and posted outwith Britain at that time - it is so easy to start assuming!

Freda Report 6 Nov 2010 23:20

As yet I have been unable to find them on the 1851 Census for Scotland or England.

FannyByGaslight Report 6 Nov 2010 23:15

Your welcome.
Where were they in 1851 please?

Freda

Freda Report 6 Nov 2010 23:10

OK it appears I will have to send for the marriage certificate - just hope that it is my George and Eliza or purchasing the certificate will be a waste of time and money. I have the reference numbers so will send for it in the near future. I was obviously getting mixed up with Scottish and English certificates where the Scottish pre 1855 do not give parents names or occupation.
May I thank you for your assistance tonight.

FannyByGaslight

FannyByGaslight Report 6 Nov 2010 23:03

English marriage certificates have fathers names and occupations on them even in 1847,its the pre 1837 ones that dont as there were no certs and it was just parish..If they knew who their father was of course.

Freda

Freda Report 6 Nov 2010 22:57

This is an English Marriage Certificate and in 1847 - it does not provide names of parents. If I could have found his death certificate it hopefully would give me his parents names, his age at death etc. This is all too difficult.
I have to thank you for the help you are giving me.
George has been a brickwall for me for a long long time I just wish I could get through it!

FannyByGaslight

FannyByGaslight Report 6 Nov 2010 22:27

So do you have Georges fathers name and occupation from his marriage cert?
Were the witnesses any of his family.
How old does he say he is on it?

Freda

Freda Report 6 Nov 2010 22:20

I have been through to Edinburgh and searched many times for his death - Edinburgh is 'Scotlands people' now. I am thinking that he must have died in service somewhere. I have looked many places for his death, and birth. I appear to have hit a brick wall.

Freda Report 6 Nov 2010 22:18

Oh Sorry I have found their marriage, cannot find their birth. According to Eliza's death certificate (Edinburgh) informant was her nephew, her father was Henry Fossit and mother Sarah Ann James.
As far as George is concerned I can find nothing on him what-so-ever. I have followed his family up the way and have got a fair amount of information on them. But none on his death or either of their parents.
